A quick guide follows: 1/7
First half (139 pages) consists of the theory chapters; discusses/defines #seapower, #seacontrol, and #smallnavies. Tries to unify different uses of those terms into something consistent. Almost Gorkan in its simplicity but the gruntwork keeps a measure of order in the chaos. 2/7
The second half is the juicy empirical stuff, going from 🇳🇴through 🇩🇰 to 🇨🇦. Basically establishes a century-long context (ships take a long time!) to see how constabulary seapower developed despite military demands. Here are some topics that aren't explicitly subheadinged: 3/7
#Modularity (cc @salisbot): section 6.2.2 on the Danish constabulary fleet and how the potential for turning patrol ships into "actual frigates" even makes its way into parliamentary debates. Dedicated 4th-tier sections for each of the classes. My RDN fieldwork is also here 4/7
Inshore/coastal patrol: with dissy focused on EEZ offshore, I needed to discuss what makes them different (or same!) from inshore. Relevant sections: RDN's Knud cls (6.2.2) & fwd basing (6.2.3), & my stay on @kystvakten's Nornen cls (5.2.4) (cc @InaHPKvam@Stulrixen) 5/7
While the main question of the dissy was the EEZ's influence, the secondary question was if larger navies behave noticeably different from smaller ones. 🇨🇦served as the comparison for this, and the discussion takes place in 3.1.2 and 7.4.2. 6/7
Anyway, it has a bit of everything: theory and concept building, cross- and within-case comparisons, ship design, procurement, sneaky boarding actions at sea, forward basing, etc. There's something for everyone, though maybe not enough for any one..but it's 506 pages already! 7/7

A rare #Thread: The great irony of all the positive coverage of #3DPrinting for making face shield headbands is that it's literally the least efficient use of that technology and older conventional manufacturing methods could do the same way faster & cheaper. So why? 1/10
A form of additive manufacturing, 3DP's advantage over conventional manufacturing is it costs the same and takes just as long to produce UNIQUE items as it does to create identical items, assuming same volume. 2/10
3DP's comparative advantage is NOT, therefore, in making mass numbers of identical items...which is what face shield headbands and mask elastic holders are. 3/10
