I’m raising all this now as the defendant’s mug shot is everywhere & he’s been discussed a lot lately. Defendant (D) is a 39yo 🟤 man, husband & father. (2/7)
Good upbringing, his dad was actually in ministry. He grew up in church. Then something changed. His 1st arrest came after disobeying an officer’s commands. This seems to have flipped a switch: 2mos later he’s re-arrested for organized criminal activity. (3/7)
Stayed out of trouble for a couple of yrs until he was picked up for loitering, of all things. 2 days later he’s jailed again for resisting arrest. Minor sentence but he’d end up spending another 4 months in jail before the end of that year. Just 0-60 in no time. (4/7)
With race such a hot-button issue, it’s no surprise, D gets arrested for public disorder, rioting, & a host of related charges during protests.
Folks have asked him to change his behavior - even using the Bible. Yet he’s just always been in the middle of controversy. (5/7)
While His family has remained supportive, I’m not going to lie: D probably has close to 30 arrests on his record and I’m very concerned how that presents. He was vilified by the State at every hearing & at every opportunity, they looked to make an example of him. (6/7)
Defendant’s name is Martin Luther King, Jr.
As #BHM comes to an end, never forget how law & rhetoric, have historically been, and continue to be, deployed against those fighting for Justice in the world. May we will all find ourselves on the right side of history. (end)

In my course on Integrating Faith & Legal Practice we discuss the need helpers have for community. We have to care for ourselves in order to serve others. The conversation made me realize the problem w/ most church small groups🧵:
1st, to understand the issue let me give a healthy model. 1 day each week, my firm shuts down early for a staff meeting. The purpose is to give us an opportunity to communicate w/ each other about what’s going on in our lives - the things we’re struggling w/ emotionally. (2/12)
Things we’re processing. Our family lives. We share good things, bad things, successes, plans & hopes. These may be connected to our work or not. Everyone’s invited to share @ their comfort level (or not at all). We open & close in prayer but it’s decidedly not bible study (3/12)
A miscellaneous thread of Trump trial verdict info from a legal POV as I find myself answering these questions in group texts & other places online 🧵:
Why delayed sentencing?
In Texas the defendant is almost always entitled to a pre-sentence investigation (for probation eligible offenses) which helps the judge determine the appropriate sentence at the sentencing hearing. (1/2)
The sentencing hearing can consist of witnesses
for the state or defense designed to encourage the court to choose an appropriate sentence as they see it. That could be just as long and intensive as the main trial. So, it’s probably for a similar process. (2/2)
Recently someone jabbed @ the fact I’m married to a ⚪️ woman. I’ve not hidden that fact nor our interracial family. But, I’m more protective of family since we were threatened in 2020.
In 2016, I chronicled my deconstruction journey from ⚪️ evangelicalism on FB (whew🙄) 🧵(1/8)
If you’re really interested you can see it all there. But I’ll never let go of this portion I shared in July that year:
I grew up in a time & place where it was not socially acceptable to be black. If you wanted to see a movie with a black actor, you drove 45 minutes away (2/8)
to the St. Vincent Mall b/c that was the "black" mall. Pierre Bossier Mall was the "white" mall & only played "white" movies.
Teachers spoke down to me. Students used the N word in front of other students & teachers with impunity. One sweltering Louisiana summer day, (3/8)
I’ve shared this in other contexts. It’s a pyramid scheme from a bird’s eye view. Here are the roles: 🧵(1/11)
1st, the Scammer. The scammer is the leader. The thermostat (they *set* the temperature in the room), not a thermometer (that *reads* the temperature in the room). They’re the “shot caller”. The leader’s Leader. (2/11)
2nd tier is those in on it w/ the Scammer in close proximity. They may help brainstorm the plans. They’re movement leaders who can amplify his voice. By design, they appear to be “one of us” They’re too valuable to do the dirty work themselves directly. (3/11)
Kyle, either unblock me or get a life. But either way, let’s maybe spend energy doing something other than spreading vitriol. People are looking to you to be a leader. Do better.
Of all the controversial things I’ve said, drilling down on what should be an obvious joke & feigning to be incensed by it - after ALL THE JUNK YOU’VE POSTED…okay. 🤔
Maybe it’s the flaw of living with our own P.O.V. that we think something’s funny when it’s hurtful to others. I accept that - maybe I’m not funny. I’m sorry for offending people. My words, my actions, my responsibility.
I’m leaving all of this up b/c I’ve nothing to hide…1/3
A friend, who’s a POC, owns a restaurant selling ethnic food. A while ago, the college pastor of a large church starting meeting a woman there. A lot. Later on it came out they were having an affair & he was removed.
But my friend told me something important I’ll never forget:
All the times they met there, they never ordered a thing.
They were only meeting at an minority-run business because they knew they wouldn’t see people from church there.
This is disgusting for many reasons. His business was being used as an instrument of the affair.
In the same way the ⚪️ evangelical church often uses POC for storefront diversity w/o regard to their personhood, the pastor/member were USING this minority-owned business as cover for their wrongdoing. But didn’t have a high enough opinion of the culture to invest in / enjoy it.
