Yesterday, members of the #AfghanEvac coalition joined volunteers from across the ecosystem for a @WhiteHouse event hosted by the NSC to recognize the work of the dedicated Afghans & volunteers who put their hearts and souls into this relocation & resettlement effort.
While there are many hundreds & thousands of other dedicated folks who have been involved in this effort, this small group represents the wide range of volunteers who continue to work to ensure our Afghan friends can begin new lives here and pursue their own American dream.
A nonpartisan effort like none other, the volunteers all across this ecosystem represent the best of America, combining a wholesale commitment to our #Afghan allies, the willingness to do hard and heartbreaking work, and the unparalleled dedication to see it through to the end.
Yesterday’s event highlights and recognizes the journey we have all been on as we strive to #keepthepromise we made to our #Afghan allies.
While this journey has been long, it is far from over. We must keep at it until the job is done. Today we recommit to that promise, together.
It is a privilege to stand shoulder to shoulder with #Afghan volunteers, whose contributions to this effort are immeasurable. The journey they have undertaken cannot be be overstated, and their dedication to seeing their fellow Afghans to safety sets the example for all of us.
Attendees received a letter from @POTUS acknowledging the impact and thanking them for their hard work. Also received: a piece of art produced by one of the more than 40,000 Afghan children while they were on one of the safe have at US military bases.
We hope that events like this remind the American people why this effort is so important. When we make a promise as a country, we keep it. Our Afghan allies deserve no less, and #AfghanEvac is proud to continue to work alongside the dedicated folks who will ensure that happens.
Thank you to @SecVetAffairs, @SecMayorkas, @JakeSullivan46, @DepSecDef, and so many others for making this a priority, for standing with us and our Afghan friends, and for committing to do this work for as long as it takes.

Previous recommendations to @StateDept from the OIG on compliance with quarterly reporting and processing times were not fully or adequately addressed -- resulting in long-standing problems growing worse over the last year.
Wait times for processing are too long and not calculated consistently across different relevant orgs.
Interoperability challenges between government technology systems create issues with reliability of information.
Lack of interagency coordination continues to be a barrier.
Less than a week away from the 8th full month of non-government, private, and non-profit sector volunteers bridging the gaps in government to help keep our commitments to Afghanistan.
Folks are exhausted, frustrated, and angry.
There aren't any good answers.
Processing speed and capacity has increased but there remain thousands of Afghans waiting for processing of SIV applications, family reunification, P1/P2 referrals. Folks are hungry and scared.
All across the US Afghans are feeling forgotten and their future remains uncertain.
Many in Congress who were loud in August seem to have moved on to other things.
An adjustment of status and expansion of the SIV program may be on the horizon but it hasn't yet been introduced and our divided politics will always be a threat to getting anything done.
A #TopTen list of things that, if enacted tomorrow, would drastically improve outcomes for all involved in #AfghanEvac 1. Appoint an Ambassador to Qatar (vacant 5 years) 2. Waive HP fees, issue clear guidance, and refund fees for #Afghans denied 3. Allow virtual visa interviews
4. Direct and active @POTUS engagement with foreign leaders toward expanding capacity & throughput for flights & other processing overseas 5. Creative executive orders to maximize housing capacity, which would also address homelessness benefitting all Americans.
6. Establish permanently & staff appropriately the CARE team at @StateDept, as well as the @DHSgov team & entire ecosystem of US gov agencies involved 7. Emergency funding for rapid expansion of resettlement agency staff & resources for national orgs & local affiliates.
