Tories accuse Simon Case of left-wing bias over Covid rules
Cabinet Secretary’s comments revealed in leaked WhatsApp messages lead to claims that he overstepped the mark of Civil Service impartiality
Britain’s top civil servant has been accused of left-wing bias by senior Tories after he dismissed concerns about Covid rules as “pure Conservative ideology”.

Simon Case is facing questions over his political impartiality and conduct during the pandemic,
following the emergence of leaked WhatsApp messages obtained by The Telegraph.

On Saturday Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister, was forced to declare that Mr Case, who is Cabinet Secretary and head of the Civil Service, retained his “confidence”.
Esther McVey, a former Cabinet minister, led the criticism of Mr Case’s conduct, saying: “This is the highest civil servant in the land letting the cat out of the bag by suggesting that one of the most centrist of Conservative MPs was pursuing ‘pure Conservative ideology’
simply for questioning some of the lockdown rules.

“Leaving aside the fact that this is a Conservative government and so what would he expect from its ministers, if Mr Case thinks Alok Sharma was pursuing such a hard-line Conservative ideology
it can only mean that he is yet another senior civil servant on the left wing of British politics.”

A leaked cache of government messages has revealed how Simon Case, the current head of the Civil Service, said to Matt Hancock the public needed to be told to isolate by “trusted local figures, not nationally distrusted figures like the PM”.

The description of Mr Johnson is likely to be embarrassing for the Cabinet Secretary and potentially the former prime minister, whose character is being questioned - and who appointed Mr Case to his position.

This just goes to show that the Tories are totally unable to get a story straight
In this article Dan Hodges throws his few pennies in
This headline relates to late Dec

- Yesterday she was an agent of Labour in early 2022 when undertaking the Sue Gray report
- Yet yesterday it was reported Badenoch wanted to promote her and Case blocked the appointment and Sunak failed to intervene and that was February
It would be useful if the Tories could at least give one consistent version of events
Then in the article the usual fantasy and conspiracy is invested - she has been leaking information......
No concern it seems when Badenoch wanted to promote her

It is not the first time Mr Zahawi, an MP since 2010, has faced financial controversy.
Mr Zahawi was paid more than £1 million over two years as a part-time adviser to an oil company operating in the Gulf.
However, his income at the time from Gulf Keystone Petroleum
was met with criticism from shareholders — who had seen their investment drop from a share price of 425p to 104p. There was no suggestion of any impropriety by Mr Zahawi.
He worked as chief strategy officer for Gulf Keystone Petroleum,
a British oil and gas exploration and production company in Iraq.
During his time at the company from 2015 to 2017, he accrued more than £1 million in salary and bonuses, according to his registered list of interests.

Many will have seen the CIVITAS attack on benefits yesterday
Today it is is debunked by the SPECTATOR - things have really got that bed
Long thread to beat paywall
#ToriesOut201 #SunakOut92 #GeneralElectionNow
A report claiming a majority of us receive more in benefits than we stump up in tax made headlines yesterday. The analysis produced by the think tank Civitas contends that 36 million Britons, or 54 per cent, live in households that get more out than they put in.
This finding may well appeal to those who reckon the country consists of lazy, feckless scroungers on the take from hard-working people like them.
At risk of spoiling the fun, the truth is a little more prosaic.
