I spent the weekend in Jackson, MI for the #FRC2023 robotics competition (my son is on the team). This photo captures a scene straight out of an espionage thriller movie--these 2 girls had to replace a faulty motor with literally *seconds* to spare before their next competition.
Normally this was a situation where a half-dozen adult mentors (w/professional engineering or electrical experience) would have jumped in, but these 2 high school students pulled it off themselves w/only their fellow pit crew members to assist. Their parents should be very proud.
With their fellow pit crew members right afterwards. Go #BionicBlackHawks @FRC2834!
Here's the robots in action--unfortunately I had to trim away the first section (where they operate autonomously) due to Twitter video time limits but you get the idea. Very cool. #FRC2023 @FRC2834 #BIonicBlackHawks
The scoring system is incredibly complex--every match has alliances of 3 "red" robots working together against 3 "blue" robots--they actually switch between red & blue for each match--so you're not just trying to get points for your own team but also your alliance.
It's not just about putting cones & cubes on the poles/shelves, though--they also get points for balancing on the charging station (the big balance beam thing), for being in certain positions at certain points during the match, for working together, for blocking opponents, etc.
Just about EVERY aspect of the robots are handled by the HS students themselves (w/assistance from mentors): Programming, electrical wiring, chassis design, material choice, acquisition & modifications, CAD, printing, power supply, wheel design, intake & deployment design...
The students also handle repairs & modifications (see example at the top of the thread), design & develop the control systems, do field work to survey the other teams, develop strategies for themselves & their alliances (which change every match) and so on. Amazing stuff.
My son is on the programming team (he isn't in the photos above--his part was pretty much done once the matches started, at least for now). He coded a very cool feature I'm not at liberty to reveal, but I'm extremely proud of him especially as this is his first year on the team.
Oh yeah...and it's not always cubes & cones; the game itself changes every year; last year it was more of a basketball/hoop thing, other years you have to stack things WALL-E style, etc. This is the 2021 promo video which gives a good overview.
By changing the game every year, it means every team has to start from scratch each year, coming up with brand-new strategies, designs etc. every season.
I volunteered as a practice field attendant this past weekend so I got to see all 40 robots up close. You'd think they would all be pretty much the same given the constraints in dimensions & goals, but I was amazed at the variety of designs & materials used by different teams.

📣 March (& likely FINAL) update: COVID death rates by partisan lean & VACCINATION rates (w/bivalent booster data):
acasignups.net/23/03/06/march…
With Johns Hopkins University, the NY Times *and* the White House COVID Response Team all shutting down their county-level COVID death data tracking projects this month, this will likely be the last time I can compare county-level death rates vs. vaccination rates.
Since COVID vaccines were widely available to all U.S. adults as of 5/01/21, the COVID death rate has run 2.7x higher in the least-vaccinated tenth of the U.S. than the most-vaccinated.

It's run 2.4x higher in the least-vaxxed fifth vs. the most-vaxxed fifth. Image

I have my first regular maintenance appointment for my 2022 Kia Niro EV at Glassman Kia tomorrow morning.

Here’s the confirmation email I just received. 🤔
To clarify:
1. I've never owned a Mitsubishi in my life.
2. It's an EV, so the "maintenance" should be just rotating the tires, making sure the wiring isn't loose, perhaps changing the cabin filter.
3. I've never taken any car to a *dealer* for maintenance. Now I know why.
I just figured since it's an EV I might as well try taking it to a dealership one time to see what happens. Now I know. I think I'm gonna cancel & just take it to my normal mechanic to rotate the tires instead...

#SOTU: Again, it's not just 16 million Americans who've enrolled in ACA coverage...it's 17.5 million with BHP enrollees included...and *40* million with ACA Medicaid expansion included: acasignups.net/23/02/01/old-n…
However, as @POTUS Biden noted, the upgraded #ACA subsidies of the Am. Rescue Plan & Inflation Reduction Act are currently set to sunset at the end of 2025. It's time to make them permanent. #SOTU
There's also ~2.2 million Americans caught in the #MedicaidGap because they live in states which are *still* refusing to expand Medicaid via the #ACA a decade later.

📣📣📣 NEW: YES, Republicans have been dying of COVID at a much higher rate than Democrats. NO, it’s not even close to 5x higher: acasignups.net/23/01/19/yes-r…
A week ago, a tweet from a supposedly left-leaning Ph.D went semi-viral which claimed that a) 800 Republican voters are currently dying of COVID per day & b) this is 5x the rate of Democratic voters. While the partisan COVID death gap is large, both of these claims are nonsense.
I wrote a couple of threads about this over the weekend, but I've also delved deeper into the issue to look at both a) what the actual data indicates and b) where this *very* specific claim originated.

📣 Again, I'll be addressing the "Voter COVID deaths 5x higher among GOP than Dems" meme which spread over the weekend later, but for the moment, here's the latest *county level* Red/Blue & Vaxx Level COVID death rate breakout, *including* BIVALENT doses:
acasignups.net/23/01/17/janua…
Primary Dose Vaxxes: Since 5/01/21, the COVID death rate has run 2.87x higher in the least-vaccinated decile of the U.S. than the most-vaccinated decile.

This is actually a slightly *higher* ratio than a month ago.
Partisan Gap since the primary vaxxes: Since 5/01/21, the COVID death rate has run 2.77x higher in the reddest decile of the U.S. than the bluest decile. This is down slightly from a month ago.
