Tomorrow, global fossil fuel pusher General Electric (GE) is holding its annual ‘investor conference’, a high-stakes event at which the company will try to paint itself as a green, clean energy leader to investors. @generalelectric and @GE_Vernova risk hurting communities
"Those who are currently investing in fossil fuels in Bangladesh – I would like to urge them not to invest in fossil fuels, but instead invest your money in renewable energy." - Dr. Khondaker Golam Moazzem, Research Director, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD)

“Throughout #COP27, civil society has demanded we #PhaseOutFossils & called for rich countries to pay up for climate debt. People power will force an equitable end to fossil fuels + just transition to renewable energy.”
"We need to include all fossils & we want stronger language on the ban of expansion of new extraction & production. To be serious about keeping 1.5 alive we need to include those targets in the cover decision by the end of today" - H.E. Mr. Seve Paeniu, Min' of Finance, Tuvalu
"The energy & equity outcomes of COP go hand in hand. Keeping 1.5 alive means accelerating the equitable phase out of coal, oil & gas. We need a strong outcome that builds on Glasgow & acknowledges the science. If we don't see that, we'll be calling #COP27 a failure" - @catabreu_
"Fossil companies present at COP have affected the decisions made. Lack of consideration for oil & gas phase out shows this COP has failed African people. We need stronger text around fossils - this is a major backtrack from last year" - Lorraine Chiponda
Nnimmo Bassey (@NnimmoB) of HOMEF (@EcoHomef) and Oilwatch (@oilwatchafrica1) introducing an important event at #COP27 “Beyond Climate Fig Leaves: Demanding Climate Debt"
Quotes from powerful speakers in a 🧵 below 👇
“We are demanding payment for climate debt on the basis of justice, human rights, and self determination.”
“We can make the impossible possible. Those who have passed on have given us the drive to address climate change. Solidarity is the power that will let us make change.”
Happening now: "We as civil society are holding governments to account and demanding that phasing out ALL fossil fuels must be in the #COP27 cover text. Moving backwards from Glasgow would be a failure." - @mayboeve
"The fossil fuel industry is directly responsible for the destruction we are seeing around the world. At #COP27 the current cover text does not even mention fossil fuels. We want all fossil fuels to be mentioned, b/c they are all responsible for the climate crisis." - @harjeet11
"There is nothing that will stop [the industry] from making the profits shareholders want to see. We're going to continue to let [govt's & ff industry] know there will be repercussions for their actions. We must remind govt's that their loyalty is to the people." - @OmarElmawi
Today at #COP27, we @priceofoil released a briefing peeling back the curtain on the oil & gas industry’s expansion plans: the new extraction approved in 2022 & what’s in the queue for 2023-2025ーunless govts put a stop to it ➡️ priceofoil.org/investing-in-d…
A thread 🧵
First, let’s look at the deep hole the fossil fuel industry has already drilled, dug, and fracked us into. 🔥Oil & gas fields already producing or approved PRIOR to 2022 would cause 490 GtCO2, if fully extracted. 🔥
That alone is enough to push the world past 1.5C warming.
Yet, the oil and gas industry keeps digging the hole deeper. We find new fields & fracking wells approved in 2022 + on the brink of approval in the next 3yrs would lock in an extra 70 Gt of CO2. That’s equal to 17% of the world’s remaining 1.5C carbon budget. #InvestingInDisaster
