Introduction

For the last couple of decades, Identity and Access Management (IAM) has been a critical topic on the internet, allowing users to be on-boarded in various systems like e-commerce, social media, and e-governance.

However, IAM has had to make tradeoffs between security, centralization, and privacy, often favoring centralization at the expense of privacy and security.

The Emergence of SSI

The decentralized internet or "Web3" has brought new IAM patterns that focus on cryptographic keys to managing crypto assets, putting the user in control but falling short on capabilities compared to previous solutions.

The @iota Foundation sought an IAM solution that improves current versions without compromising privacy and security. They developed #Login With IOTA, centered around Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI).

What is SSI?

SSI is a concept explored by the #IOTA Foundation over the last five years, enabling individuals to control the information shared and giving verifiers the confidence to receive trustworthy data.
The Project:

With SSI gaining traction in governmental projects, the IOTA Foundation issued a Request for Proposals in March 2022. Walt.id won the project and launched Login With IOTA in June 2022.

Features of Login With IOTA

Walt.id implemented the project and continues to improve on initial ideas, allowing for seamless integration of Login With IOTA into Web2 and Web3 applications.

The IDP Kit extends existing legacy authentication and Customer Identity and Access Management solutions, while the Self-Issued OpenID Connect Protocol (SIOP) creates a direct connection between users and Web3 applications, eliminating intermediaries.

Use Cases

Developers can access functions through APIs and SDKs, including creating and registering a DID on the @iota network and issuing and verifying Verifiable Credentials, backed by IOTA Identity, enabling seamless integration of Login With #IOTA into any Web3 or Web2 app.

Conclusion

The emergence of SSI has provided a much-needed solution to the tradeoffs between security, centralization, and privacy in Identity and Access Management.

The Login With IOTA project by the IOTA Foundation and walt.id has successfully implemented SSI-based IAM solutions for Web2 and Web3. This project's features, including the IDP Kit and the integration of the IOTA Identity Framework, allow developers to easily

access functions through APIs and SDKs, enabling seamless integration of Login With IOTA into any Web3 or Web2 app, as well as other use cases that require DIDs or Verifiable Credentials.
