Paul Keating has issued a statement labelling the AUKUS submarine purchase & build the "worst international decision" by Labor since Billy Hughes tried to introduce conscription @danielhurstbne@natasha__may#auspol
This is a statement ahead of the National Press Club #npc conversation between Keating and Laura Tingle.
Calls Penny Wong and Richard Marles "two seriously unwise ministers"
Guess what? He's still pissed about Britain's surrender of Singapore
Says China is being circumscribed because it grew as big as the US.
Dares Albanese to say that Australia might go to war over Taiwan
Keating says Albanese hasn't replied to a paper he sent him on sovereignty.
"I don't think I suffer from relevance deprivation, but I do suffer concern for Australia as it most unwisely proceeds down this singular and dangerous path".
Keating now speaking. "This is about maintaining US strategic hegemony in Asia." Says China has committed the "great sin" of developing an economy the size of US, and US would prefer 20% of world population remains in poverty. #auspol#npc
Keating says China "is not the Soviet Union" because it is involved in international institutions the UN, IMF, WTO and WHO.
China would "fall over themselves to have a proper relationship with us (Australia)". But Australia has "manufactured a problem" (alignment with US.
Keating says defence has overtaken foreign policy - it's Richard Marles out there not Penny Wong. Says Wong hands money out but real foreign policy is dealing with "great powers".
Keating says "that fool (Boris) Johnson destroyed their place in Europe", so the UK is "looking around for suckers" to create "global Britain". #auspol#npc
Keating says we could buy 40-50 (conventional) submarines for $368bn. Buying 8 nuclear submarines for that is "the worst deal in all history".
Keating says the snorter of a conventional sub only needs to go up every 4 days if they're cruising. Losing one wouldn't matter.
Keating "at the kabuki show in San Diego" - only one bloke is paying, Anthony Albanese.
Keating says Penny Wong got foreign affairs 6 years ago and decided "there should be no opening for Liberal party to attack on strategic policy" - folding in with Julie Bishop and Libs to run the "smallest small target strategy".
Keating says Albanese, Wong and Marles were called in at 4pm before AUKUS was announced the next morning.
Labor could only agree if "no perceptive ability" of the gravity of the decision, "incompetence". #npc#auspol
Keating says Labor now dancing to tune of Andrew Shearer, the "foreign cell" that is ASPI. Notes Morrison boasting that Marise Payne was in dark about AUKUS.
Keating says Albanese thinks if he "drops the word sovereignty in enough sentences" it will make it so.
Reveals France offered us A NEW NUCLEAR SUBMARINE instead of AUKUS or attack class. #auspol#npc

Helen Haines: Fixing the loophole doesn’t prevent the need to stand up for the conventions and honour of this parliament, to move a censure motion when there has been such a substantial breach of trust. #auspol
Monique Ryan says if the Coalition members - "such that is actually present in the house - vote against the censure motion then they are "behaving politically rather than ethically".
Not illegal/a breach of constitution - "is that how low the bar is set?" #auspol
Kate Chaney describes the secret ministries as "Australia dipping its toe in the autocracy pool", adding that lack of respect for democratic institutions contributed to independent MPs' election. #auspol
Morrison: "I am proud of my achievements, I am proud of my govt. At a time of extreme trial - my govt stood up and faced the abyss of uncertainty we looked into, the coercion of a regional bully, and saw Australia thru the storm."
Morrison: I have no intention of submitting to political intimidation of this govt who seeks to use its numbers in this place to impose its retribution on a political opponent.
Morrison repeating his defence that he only used the powers once (PEP11) and "none of the powers were misused".
Burke asks members to think back to their first reaction. "Nobody except the member for Cook thought this was acceptable or met the standards of the House." #auspol
Morrison says he'll "assist any genuine process to learn the lessons from the pandemic" including role of states & territories.
That is NOT what Anthony Albanese announced (a targeted inquiry at his multi ministries).
So, Morrison is saying he WON'T cooperate. #auspol
Morrison did this repeatedly in office, announcing a supposed intention to do something, which he then didn't do due to self-imposed conditions making it impossible:
* Voice to parliament
* National integrity commission
* Protect LGBT kids
Not cooperating with inquiry is indefensible, so he promises he will (in theory), while setting a condition that means he won't (in practice).
You can see the little escape hatch he's built himself already.
Some other fun details: Karen Andrews office gave officials just 15 minutes to whip this statement up - invoking the PM ("the PM wants a statement") #auspol
I also enjoyed the department's secretary, Michael Pezzullo, heroically refusing to drop the statement out to select journos/put the statement on blast. #auspol
Paul Erickson says it was "odd and then galling" that the Coalition engaged in "an all-out assault on state and territory Labor Governments" mid covid pandemic. #auspol#npc
Erickson applying a gender lens to the covid response, noting Coalition govt's supposed heroes of the pandemic were all men; they ended free childcare; and Morrison's suggestion to solve women giving birth roadside w upgrade of Barton Highway rather than a maternity ward.
