On August 22 1907, an Indian woman posed quite a challenge to the British by hoisting the first version of the #IndianFlag abroad.
This woman was Bhikaiji Cama, a prominent figure within the Indian Independence Movement.
A Thread 🧵
The flag was hoisted at the Seventh International Socialist Congress in Stuttgart, Germany as a way to create an atmosphere in support of the Independence Movement.
Bhikaiji Rustom Cama was born on September 24, 1861 to an affluent Parsi family from Bombay.
She was known to be quite altruistic having treated patients during the outbreak of the bubonic plague in Bombay in 1896.
Bhikaiji Cama founded the publication Bande Mataram in Paris that went on to distribute revolutionary literature.
During the International Socialist Congress, she appealed for human rights, equality and autonomy from the British all the while appealing to her audience to cooperate in liberating India.
The flag waving event by Madam Cama intended to foster a feeling of unity amongst the diverse cultures in the country.
The flag unfurled by Bhikaiji Cama at the event is, however, slightly different from the one we know today.
The flag consisted of three colours: Green, Yellow and Red.
This flag served as the basic template of the current Indian Flag we see today.
Finally, as a mark of respect to the tricolour that we see today, workers at Karnataka Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangha in Hubballi leave their footwear outside before entering the national flag manufacturing unit!
KKGSS supplies the Tricolour that is hoisted atop the Red Fort.

He claims that most actors on the set thought that the movie was “worst” and only changed their opinion after looking at the first cut. (and who wouldn't, really!)
The movie drew its inspiration from Italian filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-up.
In fact, the makers pay a tribute to Antonioni in this scene 👇

Little bit of context - Thrissur is considered the cultural capital of Kerala and has hosted the Thrissur Pooram - at the Vadakkunathan Temple every year when the moon rises with the Pooram star in the Malayalam Calendar month of Medam.
In other words, around May every year.
The pooram event sees a good collection of elephants (more than 50) decorated with nettipattam (decorative golden headdress), strikingly crafted Kolam, decorative bells, and ornaments.
A remarkable flowering of Hindustani music happened in the Hubli - Dharwad region of Karnataka.
One of, if not the greatest exponents of Hindustani Classical Music is Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. He would've turned 100 today!
A thread 🧵celebrating BhimaNNa, THE maestro!
Pt. Bhimsen Joshi was a bit of a family black sheep. He kept running away from home as a very young child, following whichever troupe of musicians passed through his village.
His father, fed up with having to go looking for him wrote “son of teacher Joshi” on all his shirts so people who found him could send him back.
