#OTD in 1999: A USAF F-117 [82-0806/HO] is shot down in Buđanovci (Serbia). Pilot Darrell Zelko ejects safely and is rescued 8 hours later. Jet was taking part in combat operations on Yugoslav Wars and was hit by a Serbian S-125 SAM. It´s the only F-117 lost in military action.

#OTD in 1990: an Uzbekistan Government cargo IL-76 [CCCP-78781] crashes in Kabul (Afghanistan), all 9 aboard die. On approach, jet stalled less than 10 mi from airport, crew could not recover control. Enquiry pointed to crew actions, namely issues related to training.

#OTD in 1977: Tenerife Disaster. KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736, two B-747 Jumbos, collide on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport (Canary Islands Spain). 583 perished: all 248 on the KLM and 335 on PAA, where 61 survived. It remains the deadliest crash in aviation history.

#OTD in 1968: Death of Yuri Gagarin. A Soviet AF Mig-15 trainer [739] crashes in Kirzach [USSR]. All 2-crew die, including former cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the 1st man in space. On a training flight, jet went into an irrecoverable flatspin, reasons for loss of control were unclear.

#OTD in 1951: an Air Transport Charter cargo C-47 [G-AJVZ] crashes in Manchester (England), 2 of 3 crew die. On takeoff, plane stalled, went down near runway. Factors: crew actions causing #1 engine to fail, snow on the wings, delayed undercarriage retraction.

#OTD in 2005: West Caribbean Flight 9955, a L-410, crashes in Providencia (Colombia), 9 of 14 aboard die. On take-off, around V1, left engine failed. Crew continued maneuver, plane went out of control, hit trees 383 ft past runway. Inquiry highlighted crew actions.

#OTD in 1991: Singapore Airlines Flight 117, an A310 with 127 aboard, is involved in a terrorist incident in Shangi airport (Singapore). Jet was hijacked by Pakistan nationals who threatened to kill passengers. Singapore Special Forces stormed plane and killed the 4 terrorists.
