🧵Yesterday at the Missouri Capitol, pride was loud. There were tears of joy, tears of sadness, there was hope, anger, love, family, power, community, compassion, organizing, solidarity, learning, frustration… every emotion was felt. But we felt it together. #MoLeg
The MO GOP and the lies, hate, and fear they spread is loud, but their view of the world isn’t reality. They know this. We’re moving forward, whether they want to join us or not. This is why they’re spiraling. This is why they hid inside that building all day. #MoLeg twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
“What I want to say to you all is that we’re all here for the long haul. We’re not going anywhere. And whether we’re termed out or not, we’re going to keep running, for whatever the next office is, until this state looks like a state we are proud of.” @crystal_quade #MoLeg twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Yesterday was a good day. Today we continue to show up. Even when we’re tired. Even when it’s uncomfortable. Even when it’s unpopular. Even when we’re busy. Even when we’re outnumbered. We continue to show up. Because it’s just what we do. #ProtectTransKids #MoLeg

🧵Spoiler alert:

It is scripted. Every red state gets the same bills placed in their laps. It then gets a sponsor with an “R” next to their name. From there, it moves through the legislature w/o a single “aye” vote even understanding what they just voted for. #MoLeg
Don’t take my word for it, listen to MO Representative Justin Sparks (R) speak on #HB1165, a Republican sponsored bill. He lays it all out.

“This bill came out of nowhere. I still don’t know who is the driving force behind this. Still trying to figure it out, we all are.”
This interview discussing Representative Justin Hick’s (R) bill, which none of the republicans know anything about, took place on Sunday 3/26. This bill was filed, read, heard in committee, and passed out of committee by 3/22 w/o the sponsor knowing anything about it. Image

Last month, my local library (@SLCL) hosted MO GOP Representatives @benKeath, @missouri4philip, Holly Jones, & Justin Sparks for a township meeting. This evening they’re hosting Rep Keathley again.

Today, all 4 of those Representatives voted to defund Missouri libraries. #MoLeg ImageImageImage
I would strongly encourage all of you to contact these West St. Louis County Representatives and demand answers. Why are they cutting all state funding? Why is their township hosting taxpayer-funded events there still? Why are they too cowardly to stand up against this? #MoLeg ImageImageImageImage
I would also encourage you to enjoy your taxpayer funded library system and join Representative @benKeath this evening at 7 pm at the Thornhill branch of @SLCL to ask him about his vote. They don’t think they have to answer to us. Make them. Image

As #MoLeg returns from spring break and have vowed to undermine doctors & parents by banning gender-affirming care, I can’t stop thinking about this. MO state rep Justin Sparks is sponsoring #HB540, which bans trans healthcare. Listen to what he said at his church recently. twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
There’s been a lot of discussion surrounding the timing of the whistleblower complaint and these anti-trans bills “coincidentally” getting a hearing at the same time.

Listen again. Rep. Sparks calls it “divine” and says “the lord placed the bill in his lap. #MoLeg twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
As Rep Justin Sparks bans healthcare from those he deems unworthy, he states that he’s completely unqualified for this job.

“I’m not qualified to do this job. I’m not smart enough. I’m not skilled enough…”

So you’re never going to guess who directs his decisions… Yep, God.

🧵Daniel has incorrect information and automatically assumes I’m lying. This is because it never occurred to him that a woman might know more about Missouri gun laws than him. So, it’s time for a lesson. Gather ‘round. @MomsDemand #MoLeg
In 2007, Missouri repealed its permit to purchase law, which led to anywhere from 49 to 68 additional firearms deaths each year in over the following decade, according to Johns Hopkins researchers. missouriindependent.com/2021/10/31/whe…
Up until 2014, the minimum age to conceal carry in Missouri was 23. This changed in May of 2014. The Republican led general assembly lowered the age from 23 to 19. This was also the year MO Republicans pushed guns into our schools. news.stlpublicradio.org/government-pol…

🧵Did you know that The Star Spangled Banner has a 3rd verse? In the 3rd verse, Francis Scott Key had a message for the enslaved who had dared to fight for freedom—we will pursue you to get revenge…

It’s not surprising that the Missouri state Senator is so emotional…
The third verse:

“No refuge could save the hireling and slave from the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave. And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
“Key’s message to the enslaved fighting for freedom was unmistakable—we will hunt you down & the search will leave you in terror because, when we find you, your next stop is the gloom of the grave.”

Shocking that MO state Senator Nick Schroer has such huge feelings right now.

🧵 2 1/2 weeks ago, the Missouri House General Laws committee held a public hearing that included 3 anti-trans bills that would ban gender-affirming care for minors. These bills were wildly unpopular. The hearing, which included public testimony, went on for 9 hours. #MoLeg
Of the 3 anti-trans bills, Missourians on public record testifying against these bills outnumbered the support by hundreds:

#HB419 92 support/375 oppose
#HB463 122 suppt/385 oppose
#HB540 105 suppt/338 oppose
Keep in mind that only one side gets advanced notice of these hearings, giving them time to plan & organize, and it’s not the side that shows up. It’s the side who has the GOP supermajority in their corner.
