It's worth noting that due to the Medicaid Expansion deal, NSJ was told by various sources the governor will sign whatever budget comes out of the #NCGA
Notably, the governor fails to mention the explosion in homeschooling, charter enrollment, and private school enrollment following his pandemic school closures.
These aren't wealthy folks, it's folks from all income levels.
The Leandro plan is still working its way through the courts and a final amount hasn't been set yet.
This is a claim without backing. No bill is setting school curricula, districts do that.
As to the front line of the culture wars, Gov. Cooper campaigned on HB2 yet refuses to take a position on Critical Race Theory. nsjonline.com/article/2021/0…
There is also no evidence of the claims about childcare and the governor has been recycling the 'tax breaks for the wealthy' line back to when he was a candidate, yet he has repeatedly taken credit for business & pop. growth in the state as a result of #ncga tax cuts. #ncpol
Just some quick related points:
Last year's school choice proclamation, Cooper's first and only one, would appear to be for show given this Twitter thread.
In terms of folks being able to send their kids to the private school of their choice using an Opportunity Scholarship, it's worth remembering Cooper sent one of his daughters to St. Mary's, a private school with hefty tuition cost.
Also worth noting, Cooper signed the last budget passed - which included an expansion of the Opportunity Scholarships that he calls "vouchers" in his Twitter thread today. ncleg.gov/BillLookUp/202…
One more item - S406 filed at the end of March will increase Opportunity Scholarship access on a sliding income scale.
I would expect this to be incorporated when the Senate takes up budget negotiations. bergerpress.medium.com/school-choice-…

Newby, Berger & Barringer dissent. appellate.nccourts.org/opinions/?c=1&… #nced#ncpol#ncga
Berger's dissent reiterates the legislature, not the court, has the power of the purse.
He also notes "the majority takes it upon itself to resolve issues in this case without notice and in the face of this Court’s order to the contrary"
Just cycled through the channels. No major network appears to be televising the president's speech.
Most outlets have it streaming on their websites, however.
Maybe it was a space issue. This is the shot from the back after the speech ended.
Gov. Ops subcommittee on hurricanes should be back sometime after 12:30 from recess.

I'll be tweeting some, but probably not as much as the first half:
The Gov Ops Hurricane Subcommittee start is running behind. Here is the agenda & links to documents/audio & video stream: ncleg.gov/Committees/Com…
Tweets to follow. #ncpol#ncga
The meeting is coming to order now. Administrative issues are being dispensed with before proceeding.
First on the agenda is testimony from Richard Trumper, Office of State Budget and Management Disaster Recovery.
Sen. Brent Jackson is giving some opening remarks, listing the damage statistics, relief funding etc. from hurricanes Matthew and Florence.
Talks about the people whose lives are still not whole and "recovery efforts have failed them..." for some it's been six years.
Tomorrow at 9 am, the subcommittee on hurricane recovery is meeting.
Documents for the meeting are here: ncleg.gov/Committees/Com…
Of note, sometime between 2017/18 and now, the contractor for CDBG-DR management was changed.
There are issues with that.
