opening spiel: reviews of the RBA and defence got lots of coverage; reviews on women and “helping the poor” are a headache for the government. #Insiders

the government has not rushed to accept recommendations of “its own handpicked advisory panels”. The single parent payment recs are in the womens advisory - for the obvious reason - and #RaiseTheRate is in the poverty committee recs. #Insiders

montage moves across these reviews. Budget blather says Labor is refusing to #RaiseTheRate and Angus and Jim maaate seem to be in agreement on RBA reform. Uncle Phil looks gone. #Insiders

editorial is Speers mocking the unaffordability comms being pumped out by the federal government. Maiden points to the timing of Gillard’s misogyny speech and cutting single parent payment. #Insiders

it is reasonable to boost the poverty payment and reasonable to not pay for everything , says Crowley. The government is in a difficult position. Van Onselen says RBA reform is easy and #RaiseTheRate is hard. He might mean bipartisanship who knows #insiders

big ticket expensive items like… #RaiseTheRate. No mention of actual colossal expenditure like nuclear submarines and handouts to landlords and fossil fuel and other corporations. #Insiders

lotta scar tissue in Labor on “good ideas” that they could not account for the cost, says Maiden. Van Onselen, hilariously, says someone (Henry?) can speak freely now he has left the public sphere and us “back in academia”. #Insiders

it keeps coming back to these tax cuts, says Speers. Journalistic voice from nowhere. Clip of Pocock, clip of Chalmers saying the government will decide its own priorities thanks. Van Onselen says they can do everything because they are the government #Insiders

they have finite political capital but infinite actual (financial) capital seems to be what van Onselen is saying. This is media asserting its influence over Labor governments. Crowley says the government may never be so popular and the opposition so weak. #Insiders

the problem with contemporary government is incrementalism, declares van Onselen. They can just do all the things and spend the political capital (on staring down the murdoch press, presumably - Ed). Make PVO PM for a day says Maiden lol #Insiders

they will do what they can when they can says Gallagher. Is the ERC considering lifting the SPP to when the youngest turns 12? You don’t want kids starting high school in poverty do you? asks Speers. They are looking at everything. #Insiders

are you in the ERC pushing for lifting SPP “right back up” to 16? She is not going to answer that. What about older women and homelessness? Will you lift rent assistance? (Of course rent assistance will be lifted. It goes straight into landlord pockets -Ed) #Insiders

there is no doubt people on JSP are doing it tough says Gallagher. There is pressure. It is hard to live on JSP. (Words words words) Dignified life tho? She is not going to say they live an undignified life on JSP, says Gallagher. #Insiders

there are some on the panel who do not appreciate that there are budget constraints (abbr) says Gallagher. The budget was booby-trapped, she says. The tax cuts are legislated, they have not changed their position, it is a balancing act pressure pressure balance balance #Insiders

“cost of living relief” like it is separate to #RaiseTheRate is my least favourite framing in all this. Cost of living relief FOR WHO #Insiders

potential modest changes to PRRT not finalised. Sounds like it is inflation indexed? I am not across this at all sorry. Apparently fossil fuel corporations are whinging about something in this space, for a change. #Insiders

they are looking for savings and not just in areas of need but also areas of future need? Is that the claim? Digital health and e-safety were funded on basis of “terminating measures” ie not continuous. Like Trove I guess. All the pea and thimble Coalition lies. #Insiders

appointments to RBA Board. The governor welcomed the appointees. Labor thinks people with experience of working peoples lives should have input to RBA decisions. But do they have monetary policy expertise? [but isn’t MP going to be a different board]? Yes says Gallagher #Insiders

back to panel. Maiden says Gallagher was widowed as a young mum and on the SPP. She is not going to make all the changes but it is pretty obvious they will make some changes to PRRT too says Maiden #Insiders

there will not be a shakeup of monetary policy architecture says Crowley. What about the big 2024 mistake Guv Lowe made? There are serious concerns says Crowley and a compelling case for cultural change at the RBA #insiders

there was not much challenging of the Guv going on says Speers. So corporate culture then. Van Onselen says the separate monetary policy committee is worlds best practice. Maiden is looking forward to RBA board members giving speeches #Insiders

he is not defending him, says van Onselen, twice, but the RBA Governor saying he does not see interest rates being lifted until 2024 and then lifting rates 10 consecutive times was that he merely “misspoke”. #Insiders

clip of the Guv, clip of the treasurer. That’s a whack, says Maiden, of Jim’s comments. But he misspoke, bleats vanOnselen, again, and subsequently raising rates was the right thing to do. Are you in his golf club or something? asks Maiden. #Insiders

the only person with a BEc on the ERC is the prime minister, apparently. What’s Chalmers got? A PhD in political science (as does van Onselen? does he not?) he has a PhD in Paul Keating, says Maiden of Chalmers. The males snort and Maiden says “it’s true” (it is) #Insiders

clip of Andrews announcing her exit to the oppo back bench. Maiden says to pour one out for her because Dutton tried to take her (safer) seat and Andrews “absolutely snotted him” with the help of a local Lib “matriarch”, apparently. #Insiders

praising Andrews for post-election “truth telling” on the Morrison-Hurley ministries scandal, Maiden omits the ELECTION DAY - how shall we say - non-truth-telling text messages trying to raise another boat people scare. #Insiders

the promotion of Senator Nampijinpa Price to shadow cabinet. We get some cost of living vs No campaign optics for the Coalition. Van Onselen trots out the “extra National in cabinet” factoid. Quota for Nats-Libs cabinet (he means ratio) but not for women, he says. #Insiders

it is a no brainer, says Maiden, of promoting Senator Nampijinpa Price. She has star power, Maiden says. No word on promoting Senator Liddle to the outer shadow ministry or if there was I missed it. #Insiders

clip of Dutton quoting mass murderer Winston Churchill. We will fight them on the beaches, the panel chortle. The Liberals can not afford to lose more senior women, says Speers. It seems they can says Maiden #Insiders

the SG advice is unambiguous and declarative, says Crowley. Apparently the cabinet advice was shorter than the released advice. Maiden thinks it funny that the Liberals are still bleating about advice. She compares it to wanting hollandaise on the side not on your eggs. #Insiders

it is not the sermon on the mount, says Maiden. It is some lawyers advice. (Not just some lawyer, the Commonwealth Solicitor General) the panel chuckle along with this and cite other eminent lawyers who agree with the SG - former HCA judges, Twomey, Walker etc #Insiders

what does the SG advice mean for the referendum campaign/s? Maiden says the people they are pitching to do not care about SG advice. Overlooking the conflict journalism model that thrives on “Labor won’t release the advice” whining. #Insiders
