Lee Saunders: People don't want us to understand our history or the importance of our history. To get to where you want to go, you have to understand where you've come from.
@AFSCME
Lee Saunders: The history of civil rights is so important. The "I Am" story goes back to 1968 when sanitation workers weren't treated well despite providing a necessary service to the people of Memphis. (con't)
@AFSCME
Lee Saunders: (con't) The city blocked sanitation workers' efforts to organize. Things came to a breaking point when two sanitation workers were crushed in the back of the truck when the crusher malfunctioned & crashed down on them, killing them. (con't)
@AFSCME
Lee Saunders: (con't) Workers had been complaining for so long about faulty, malfunctioning equipment. Dr. King went to Memphis to support the sanitation workers. He galvanized that community & the entire community came together to work.
@AFSCME
Lee Saunders: We have a podcast called "I AM Story Podcast" that tells the history of the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike. It includes first-hand accounts. We tried to recreate the moment.

@AFSCME
Lee Saunders: We talked with Martin Luther King III, who told us why his dad felt so compelled to go to Memphis to support the striking sanitation workers.
@AFSCME
Lee Saunders: If we can identify what needs to be changed, & we come together to fight for it, we can win. That's important for people to understand.
@AFSCME
Lee Saunders: Dr. King ultimately gave his life in support of that strike & in support of their humanity, and we can't allow that to be forgotten. What is good in this country didn't magically fall from the sky; it came from people organizing & fighting for what's right.
@AFSCME
Lee Saunders: People need the representation of a union, & that's why Dr. King went to Memphis in support of the striking sanitation workers. Would it be a hard fight? Yes, of course, but the workers eventually won & achieved a contract & were represented by a union.
@AFSCME
Lee Saunders: That fight still continues today, make no mistake about it. Look at the organizing that's taking place in this country today--Walmart, Amazon, Starbucks.
@AFSCME
Lee Saunders: The deck's sometimes stacked against us because the labor laws are archaic & companies don't want to give up the power.
@AFSCME
Rick: Your "I AM Story" podcast series is riveting & is well-produced. I listened while riding my bike & probably rode longer than I should have because the podcast was that good.
#RickShow @AFSCME
Lee Saunders: Those sanitation workers were successful in their fight, despite all the obstacles against them. We have to make our voices heard today, too, & know that it's worth the fight.

Amy Hanauer: Taxes are how we make the decision about who gets what in this country. Inequality has been growing & soaring for decades now, with incredibly concentrated wealth.
@amyhanauer @iteptweets @taxjustice
Amy Hanauer: Compared to other countries, we don't make it easier on working people to raise families. If we want kids to thrive in America, we need to start with fair taxes. It's the way we can deliver the essentials to children & families.
@amyhanauer @iteptweets @taxjustice
Amy Hanauer: How are we supposed to afford childcare? Good quality childcare can cost as much as $10,000/yr but who can afford to pay that?

Bob Ney: I think the main point of Dominion was that Fox knew they were in trouble & they didn't want their emails exposed, showing problems. SmartMatic will be emboldened, based on Dominion's suit. Wouldn't you ask for more money, too?
@bobney
Bob Ney: SmartMatic has a floor, & they're starting out with Dominion's amt, plus they'll want a retraction & more. Unless there were no emails talking directly about SmartMatic, but I doubt that.
Rick: It's a good thing Fox has deep pockets.
@bobney
Bob Ney: If you add SmartMatic to Dominion's settlement, Fox could be at 60% of revenue. Fox is saying the damages are way overblown, but we'll see what they do next week.

Jesse O’Connell: I think the word of the day on Tuesday was "skepticism." We saw skepticism from a number of justices; states are bringing these suits [regarding Pres. Biden's student loan debt relief program'.
@jesseocnl @CAPAction @AMProg
Jesse O’Connell: This admin is taking every opportunity to forgive student loans through every avenue they have. Wiping out the debt for half the debt holders would really make a big impact on their lives.
@jesseocnl @CAPAction @AMProg
Jesse O’Connell: Some people incurred student loan debt but didn't finish their degrees, so they aren't benefitting from those loans & don't have the means to repay them.

Sarah Burris: I'm just gonna say: The Pope wears a dress.
Rick: The folks in TN banning drag shows in public don't follow the Pope.
Sarah: Bless their hearts.

Sarah Burris: It's funny how groups who purport to dislike this or that group of people end up being part of that group. Maybe that's something they need to explore about themselves.

Milo Vassallo: What we're dealing with right now is the consequence of a whole bunch of legislative decisions over the past years, with an oligarch--Rupert--who doesn't care about us & is making a conglomeration of media.
@FixMediaNow @MAD_Democracy
Milo Vassallo: Technology has changed & is the root at a lot of what is happening. The Fairness Doctrine applies specifically to broadcast television & radio waves, not satellite TV.
@FixMediaNow @MAD_Democracy
Milo Vassallo: We can stem the tide of consolidation. There are very few limitations to consolidation of that scale. The FCC could have the power to roll back some of the consolidation that's taken place.

The Railway Safety Act of 2023 is a good start but isn't enough. It would increase the fine the federal gov't can put on railroads from $225,000 to 1% of annual operating income, which could be tens of millions of dollars.

Detection devices when there's hazmat on the train checks for things like heat every ten miles. The train that derailed in East Palestine? The detection devices were checked either every 20 miles...or not at all. (con't)

(con't) Even when these detection device sensors go off & all the machinery is warning of danger, there's someone off-track in a booth saying, "Aw, don't worry about it."
