In December 2022, the court directed the Ministry of Law and Ministry of Home Affairs to file their respective responses on a plea seeking direction for drafting of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by the Law Commission.

Adv. MR Shamshad appearing for one of the intervenor: @AshwiniUpadhyay has filed four petitions in the #SupremeCourt and it has dismissed all the petitions, by giving some reasons in the order.

CJ Sharma: We would like to see those orders.

Shamshad: There were 10 petitions dismissed out of which 4 were filed by my learned friend (@AshwiniUpadhyay) and .... referring to the para of the order, reads portions.

@AshwiniUpadhyay: Clarifies, that through the present plea, he isn't seeking "implementation of the Uniform Civil Code". He is seeking only a DRAFT of the UCC by the Law Commission, so that it is in public domain.

@AshwiniUpadhyay: The problem My Lord! Is that there is no draft of the Uniform Civil Code in the public domain and so everyone is interpreting it, in their own way. That's why a draft is necessary.
