We’re calling on the @bcndp to immediately regulate the #ShortTermRental industry in order to reduce its effects on the #housingcrisis & improve safety for renters & hosts.
Currently, BC has no system to accurately identify the number or type of housing units in the short-term rental market
Even in municipalities with existing bylaws and business license programs, hundreds if not thousands of units listed on these sites are unlicensed. 2/ #bcpoli
According to Independent watchdog Inside Airbnb there are just under 6,000 listings in Vancouver alone with 82% of them being entire homes or apartments.
We have a patchwork of policies across BC and local gov'ts do not have the resources to address this challenge on their own.
Without platform accountability and provincial funding and support to enforce municipal bylaws, regulating STRs and keeping people safe is impossible. 4/
We know gov't is working hard to increase supply, and to allow for density zoning & legal secondary suites.
But w/out meaningful work on the STRs, there is a real risk that as new homes come online, many will become short-term rentals, rather than homes for people. 5/5 #bcpoli

Nearly half of Canadian women experience intimate partner violence, yet the federal government plans to cut funding for women’s shelters.
BC must act to fill any necessary gaps, while delivering on the several unmet promises made by the @bcndp. 2/ #bcpoli
A multi-year action plan to address gender-based violence was due by the end of 2022 & is nowhere to be seen.
The @bcndp continue to defer promised funding for sexual assault centres, while calls for on-campus resources from @students_bc continue to fall on deaf ears. 3/ #bcpoli
Last year an average of 432 children went missing each month from BC's foster care system.
This is evidence of multi-level failure. Our kids aren't safe under government care.
The @bcndp promised "transformational" change but continues to prop up this failing system. 1/ #bcpoli
.@RCYBC states "a lack of action has resulted in a welfare system that functions as a pipeline to child exploitation, sex trafficking & murdered/missing Indigenous girls."
This gov't has been warned that their care is unacceptable, yet problems continue to worsen. 2/ #bcpoli
Inadequate conditions lead hundreds of youth to go missing or disappear from care every month.
How can the @bcndp ensure the safety of the children it cares for without knowing where they are?
I asked @MitziDeanBC this today in Question Period & she gave a non-answer 3/ #bcpoli
Since 2019 CGL has issued more than 30 warnings, nearly 20 orders and 3 fines.
How many more times will #CGL be allowed to disregard the laws and regulations that ensure the safety of British Columbians and protection of our environment and be allowed to continue? 2/ #bcpoli
These are not isolated incidents. #CGL has demonstrated a reckless, spiteful and dangerous attitude towards laws and regulations.
They simply absorb the costs of relatively small fines and continue to destroy ecosystems. 3/ #bcpoli
Today I asked Minister @GeorgeHeyman and @BruceRalston what role the former premier played, while he held public office, in the @bcndp's decision to support Teck's request not to bring the Elk Valley pollution case to the International Joint Commission. 2/ #bcpoli
People’s trust in gov't & democracy is based on the assumption that gov’t is working in the public’s interest.
A premier joining the board of a company his gov't defended from investigation immediately after leaving politics erodes that trust. 3/ #bcpoli thenarwhal.ca/bc-john-horgan…
Ship breaking involves dismantling & recycling ships. It's one of the most environmentally damaging industries.
The @bcndp has permitted ship breaking operations in Baynes Sound where 50% of BC's shellfish is produced, risking our food security. 1/ #bcpolibcgreencaucus.ca/b-c-greens-cal…
Old ships contain asbestos, hazardous materials, and heavy metals.
If properly regulated, ship breaking is an important industry.
However there are no specific regulations in BC, which poses a serious risk to workers, communities, and marine environments. 2/ #bcpoli
Despite many violations, the @bcndp has not properly regulated or enforced the industry, including its own cease & desist orders against companies operating in Union Bay.
By failing to act, gov't is telling companies they can ignore the limited regulations that exist. 3/ #bcpoli
