The Hindu majority Meitei people in Manipur have been subjected to repeated violence by Christians (for Ex -2007) using existing issues as an excuses.
An extremely active conversion racket there have also led to demography changes there. (2/n) @madhukishwar @AmitLeliSlayer
The Meitei are 53% by population but they are restricted to only 10% of land. The rest of the hills are reserved exclusively for so called Tribals.
Demands for ST status started in 2012 and the resulting High Court order on March 27th was used as an excuse for violence. (3/n)
The real issues is the Christian Kukis are using the hill lands for cultivating poppy forming an illegal drug economy and destroying the reserved forests and ecology.
They are also supporting illegal immigrants from Burma to settle. NRC has been a persistent demand here. (4/n)
The 2023 attacks started on 27th April when an ITLF mob burnt down a gym cum sports facility in Churachandpur.
Things got out of hand on 3rd May when ATSUM christians called for a "tribal solidarity march" to oppose the native Meitei being included in ST category. (5/n)
The "Tribal Solidarity Rallies" held all over Manipur were heavily armed mobs with AK47s and other ultra sophisticated weapons. A large number of militants from Myanmar had joined the rallies.
Most of the rallies turned violent with loot, arson, stone pelting and firing. (6/n) twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
The Kukis and Nagas were never disarmed and they receive huge supply of arms from Chinese controlled Burma. Burma is also accused of pushing Rohingyas into Manipur.
In this situation the Government took away all the licensed weapons of the Meitei leaving them defenceless. (7/n) twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Systematically all the houses of the Hindu majority Meitei were burned down in at least 4 villages.
All houses were looted and valauables stolen.
A 1.5 year old child was burnt to death in one such house. Hindu mandirs were burnt. Men, women and children were targeted. (8/n) twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
The shops of Meitei businessmen were systemically looted and burnt.
The Forest Department Office was also burnt down.
The attackers fired automatic weapons at the defenceless Meitei killing people.
From personal unverified accounts there are at least 25 cases of r@pes.
There are accounts of old women being beaten up.
The estimated death toll so far is 54.
The govt. must provide compensation, rebuild houses and mandirs and return the licensed weapons to the Meitei. (10/10)
