In today's #dailysoup, let's go to #Indonesia as I'll introduce an Indonesian military x defence academic and Putin fangirl, Connie Bakrie. She is known for parroting common pro-China and pro-Russia peepotalking points in her articles, seminars, and soc-med posts.
1/19
From the outside, Bakrie may look like your "ordinary academic". After finishing her doctorate at Universitas Indonesia, she attended two security studies programs at the US x UK before starting her academic career.
From the inside, it is a totally different story.
2/19
Bakrie's husband, Djadja Suparman, once served as one of the key military heads on top of Indonesia's transition of democracy after the fall of Soeharto in 1998.
Suparman was convicted of a corruption case related to a land acquisition scandal in a city south of Surabaya.
3/19
Instead of being an "ordinary academic", Bakrie ended up being a vatnik x pro-China peepotalker, especially in her articles, her Instagram posts, and various seminars and talk shows.
4/19
Bakrie's stance has been somewhere along the lines of "being one of those people from the non-aligned movement who get gullibly attracted to the BRICS without knowing what Russia and China are up to".
She attended peepotalking events on the "non-aligned movement".
5/19
Bakrie peepotalked about how "Putin is the most interesting and powerful man in the world", and then she clumsily compared Putin and Xi to Soekarno, a notable independence hero in Indonesia.
In reality, Putin and Xi are more like war criminals than heroes.
6/19
Two days after Russia started invading Ukraine, Bakrie suggested that "Russia and Indonesia are threatened by foreign forces, especially NATO" and "AUKUS and the QUAD are threatening China and non-aligned countries".
In reality, Russia and China are the ones threatening.
7/19
Moreover, Bakrie added another pro-Russia peepotalking point when she "blamed Ukraine for allowing other countries to go against Russia".
Meanwhile, she parroted Putin's infamous January 2007 statement of "NATO's expansion being a serious provocative threat".
8/19
Then, Bakrie stated that "NATO and the USA will learn a lot from Putin about balance and mutual respect", criticising the Ukraine deal for being "unfinished".
9/19
Five days after Putin started invading Ukraine, Bakrie, in an Indonesian talk show, suggested that "Indonesia should buy fighter jets from China" and that "Indonesia should not sanction Russia so that it could keep on getting Russia-made Sukhoi jets".
10/19
In a news interview, Bakrie suggested that "Russia should not be isolated for the sake of peace", adding that "UNCLOS needs the support of Russia and China".
In reality, China has been violating the UNCLOS in the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea.
11/19
Bakrie attended a couple of seminars with Russian officials, including the 2022 Moscow Conference on International Security, in which she served as one of its guests while Putin himself provided the welcoming remarks.
12/19
Besides the common pro-Russia peepotalking points (e.g. the infamous "NATO expansion" remark), Bakrie spewed out pro-China peepotalking points, including "the US and NATO created the Taiwan issue", "Western alliances like AUKUS x QUAD will put Asia in danger",...
13/19
..."Taiwan is a part of China", and "we should not be involved in the Taiwan and SCS issues when China attacks".
Moreover, Bakrie criticised Pelosi's visit to Taiwan and added that "the AUKUS and the QUAD are also a threat to Indonesia".
14/19
Meanwhile, when the topic of Indonesia's dispute with China in the SCS over the Natuna Islands, Bakrie said that "Indonesia was just dragged into the dispute".
15/19
Furthermore, Bakrie engaged in anti-West whataboutism, especially when she said that "...the US is trying to fuel conflicts in Asia, Africa, and Latin America".
Bakrie also posted the infamous anti-West poster "blaming the US for being the aggressor".
16/19
Bakrie attended a Valdai Club seminar, asking Putin if "it's possible for Russia and China to get rid of AUKUS, QUAD, and NATO".
She fangirled Putin when she asked him "for a picture with her", which was followed by a compliment from him.
17/19
In April 2023, Bakrie attended a seminar with infamous vatnik Scott Ritter.
In today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce a disputed series of small rocks in the South China Sea, the Scarborough Shoal.
Forming a triangular shape, it is known to be a hotspot for SCS disputes between China and the #Philippines.
1/18
The Scarborough Shoal, known as "Huangyan Dao" in Chinese and "Bajo de Masinloc" in Filipino, is located in the Philippines' EEZ or the West Philippine Sea.
It is also located 340km W of Manila, 575km E of the Paracel Islands, and 523km N of the Spratly Islands.
2/18
Loads of oil and natural gas, polymetallic nodules and different kinds of sea creatures (e.g. lobster, jack, mackerel, etc.) are present in the Scarborough Shoal.
The shoal is also a major fishing ground for fisherfolk...
In today's #dailysoup, I'll continue talking about a notorious CCP-owned firm, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), together with its subsidiaries, especially CHEC.
This time, I'll tackle their fraudulent stints around the world, particularly in #APAC.
1/21
Since its inception in 2005, CCCC has been specialising on the financial stuff, construction x infrastructure, contracting, and dredging.
Moreover, CCCC even landed at 60th place in Fortune Global 500.
2/21
CCCC has offices at around 123 countries in the world, with 41 in Asia and 4 in Oceania.
This entry will serve as a rabbit hole before we talk about the rest of the BRI projects handled by the Chinese firm.
In today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce another BRI project in #Malaysia, the Trans-Sabah Gas Pipeline.
Just like the East Coast Rail Link, another BRI project, it is known for its role in the 1MDB scandal, as well as its connections with a shady Chinese company.
1/16
Costing RM4.06B, the Trans-Sabah Gas Pipeline (TSGP) is a proposed 662km petrochemical x gas pipeline starting from Tuaran and ending in Sandakan.
The TSGP is located at northern Sabah, which is just close to the Philippine provinces of Sulu x Palawan.
2/16
Like the ECRL, the TSGP is one of the BRI projects offered by China when infamous former Malaysian PM Najib Razak signed a 2016 deal with Beijing to bring Malaysia to the BRI to "cover up 1MDB".
In today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce the current Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ismail. He is known for his versatile business investments and "reclamation projects, including the controversial Princess Cove and Forest City.
1/20
Sultan Ibrahim Ismail is the son of Sultan Iskandar, who served as a Sultan of Johor and a Yang di-Pertuan Agong (monarch) of Malaysia before his death in 2010.
This is why his full name is Sultan Ibrahim Ismail ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.
2/20
Although Sultan Ibrahim Ismail succeeded his father as the Sultan of Johor in January 2010, he was officially coronated in March 23, 2015.
For today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce Dennis Uy. A Filipino businessman known to be the founder of Udenna Corporation, a major petroleum x shipping company in my country, he is shrouded with business controversies.
More info in this 🧵.
1/22
Hailing from Davao City, Uy began his business career by setting up a barbecue store named "Dencio's Kamayan", which grew into a small retail chain.
2/22
Then, in 2002, Uy founded the Udenna Company, a conglomerate comprising of a gas station chain (Phoenix Petroleum Philippines), a convenience store chain (FamilyMart), a logistics firm (Chelsea Holdings), as well as Enderun Colleges, Clark City Global Corporation,...
For today's #dailysoup, I will talk about the causes of the Three Kingdoms Period of #China.
This is for immersion x context purposes as @mydearfaye is currently streaming "Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty", which takes place during that period.
More info in this 🧵.
1/18
What preceded the Three Kingdoms Period (220 AD - 280 AD) was the #Han Dynasty, which was marked with an expansive economic and political power, making it one of the greatest classical civilisations.
Just like any other empire, the Han Dynasty experienced its own downfall.
2/18
Four main theories behind the fall of the Han Dynasty are explained by Chinese historians.
These theories are: internal struggles, the rising power of the empress x court eunuchs over child emperors, external struggles, and rebellions.
