Yesterday we sent a letter to @CareInspect about Guidance on the inclusion of transgender including non-binary young people
careinspectorate.com/images/documen
Here is what we had to say a🧵
We believe it presents a serious risk to the wellbeing of vulnerable children & young people & have requested its immediate withdrawal.
We identified the following
1. Concerns about LGBT Youth Scotland
2 Lack of Safeguarding
3 Breaches of the Health & Social Care Standards
LGBT Youth Scotland are currently being investigated by @PoliceScotland for grooming and historical abuse
A complaint was made by @sos_scotland to @ScotCharityReg for practices which breached safeguarding & were subsequently given advice by OSCR
Why would @CareInspect an organisation who has responsibility for setting standards and scrutinising the Care services put themselves in a position of reputational risk and a serious failure to safeguard children and young people?
There is a worrying lack of safeguarding in the document eg Failure to consider the @thecassreview including
❗Risks associated with social & medical transition.
❗over representation of looked after children being referred
❗No consideration of underlying psychological distress
❗serious concern about the lack of effective assessment

The guidance is based on an affirmative model encouraging people to believe that they can become another sex & that will resolve their emotional & psychological difficulties it is irresponsible & leads to long term harm
Care professionals should provide evidence based support but there is no research or evidence provided in the Guidance

The reference in the Guidance to supporting a young person through medical transition is abhorrent. The removal of healthy body parts should not be supported
The guidance suggests 12 year olds can consent to irreversible medical treatment but how can a 12 year old understand the full impact of sterilisation.

There is no consideration of the impact of others in a residential setting in particular privacy and safety of girls
There is no acknowledgement that staff & other young people have the right to hold the belief that sex is immutable & cannot be changed

Children & young people are presented as if they only operate in a residential bubble with no contact with parents, schools or social activity
In producing this guidance, the @CareInspect has failed to meet the standards it expects of organisations. Specifically

“4.11 I experience high quality care and support based on relevant evidence, guidance and
best practice.”

hub.careinspectorate.com/media/2544/sg-…
Nor does it meet the Quality Framework Quality indicator 1.3: Children and young people’s health benefits from their care and support experience: experience care and support based on relevant research, guidance, standards and good practice.

careinspectorate.com/images/documen…%
We reiterate the promotion of medical damage to healthy children and young people is beyond reprehensible and the @CareInspect should withdraw this guidance immediately

Scottish Labour Party @ScottishLabour
voted For the #GRR but they recognise the bill needs ammendments & gave a commitment to "seek to amend the bill at stage 2 to respect the primacy of the Equality Act 2010 and to have that placed on the face of the bill".
#NoToSelfID
What happens next? stage 2
The #GRR Bill goes back to the @SP_EHRCJ Committee & MSPs can suggest amendments
Other concerns included the lowering of the age from 16 to 18
& cross border issues

A 🧵on why #NoToSelfID is important right now. On 27 October @scotgov will vote to reform the Gender Recognition Act #GRA If the vote goes through this removes the need for a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria & people can self declare the gender they wish to live as /1
@scotgov and @ShonaRobison have told us that no man would declare himself to be something he isn't to access vulnerable women & children. We know this is not true. There are numerous examples where this had happened.
The #GRA reform will require people to live as their acquired gender for 3 months before applying for a #GRA this means you must self identify as your preferred gender. A man can self identify as a woman or a woman can self identify as a man.
