Sr Adv Pradeep Rai: Because of his Lordship, none of his family members are in law. Because they've seen how difficult the profession is. They decided it's not their cup of tea.
Rai: Justice MR Shah has passed more than 712 judgements. Justice Chandrachud is number two. Atleast in one area, you have by passed Hon'ble Justice Chandrachud who is the most popular judge in the country.
AG R Venkatramani: How do we measure a judge by an extempore speech when his judgments gather the inner most thoughts of your mind and vast reaches of jurisprudence?
Sr Adv Vikas Singh: I am told he is going to be here in Delhi for some time. So we will have the benefit of his guidance whenever we want and he'll also be doing some good work even post retirement which will benefit the society.
CJI DY Chandrachud: My first engagement with Justice Shah was in 1998 when I was the ASG of India for Gujarat HC. We were both going to be appearing together. When I landed I realised I forgot my gown in Bombay.
CJI DY Chandrachud: He spearheaded various initiatives as a judge to take various initiatives to the grassroots...As executive chairperson of Gujarat State Legal services authority he marshalled awareness campaigns...
CJI DY Chandrachud: If you speak to Justice Shah you'll realise that he can strike a conversation on any topic- from global affairs to movies. He will discuss movies with you and even criticise bad screenplay.
CJI DY Chandrachud: During COVID times, we used to assemble at 10 am to decide what we felt about the matter- because we couldn't sit next to each other during COVID
CJI DY Chandrachud: One of the best compliments I've received in seven years is when he said that I've learnt one thing from you- the ability to suss out which cases to be converted in causes.
CJI DY Chandrachud: He would send all drafts to me overnight. The CB judgement in Maharashtra case was returned to me in less than 48 hours with an annotation at the bottom.
CJI DY Chandrachud: It was due to the cooperation of Justice MR Shah and other brother and sister judges that we were able to conduct paperless proceedings in the CB matters.
CJI DY Chandrachud: Justice Shah has a fighting spirit of a lion. Last year, we were all worried when his health deteriorated in his trip to Dharamshala. When I called to ask about his health, I was shaken up because I could only hear sirens...
CJI DY Chandrachud: But I heard at the other end of the line his familiarly chirpy and energetic voice informing me that he was fine. He returned soon enough to work...
CJI DY Chandrachud: Mukesh Bhai has an amazing sense of humour...his funny quips and anecdotes lighten the courtroom's atmosphere even during the dark days of second wave of covid.
CJI DY Chandrachud: As his colleagues, we have all benefitted from his kind nature and generosity...on our way back from Noida courts, he'd make me wait at 1 pm and give me a fistful of M&M chocolates...
CJI DY Chandrachud: He has always given practical advice...he was full of excellent advice which helped greatly when we made almost 7 appointments in a short span of time.
CJI DY Chandrachud: Mukesh Bhai we will miss your candour, humour, and wit on the bench. But more importantly we'll miss a colleague who was our constant source of support...
CJI DY Chandrachud: I must also recognise the important role played by his spouse Dimpi Shah who gave up her time in his company in Delhi for the last 4 years to be in Ahmedabad to take care of his parents.
CJI DY Chandrachud: Before I conclude, I would like to quote the words of one of my favourite singers...I know he's not a lover of western music but I am and I can't avoid making a reference to Bob Dylan.
CJI DY Chandrachud: "Aankh se door sahi, Dil se Kahan jayega, jaane Wale tu hamein yaad bohot aayega"
Thank you for your contributions to legal fraternity...
Justice MR Shah: It feels that I have just entered the SC only a few days back. Time has run very fast. I feel that before the flight took off, it already landed.
Justice MR Shah: Parting is always painful. I part my ways with my brother and sister judges and the members of the bar with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes. But everyone has to go.
Justice MR Shah: My journey from court no 13 to court no 4, my journey from Noida to delhi, my journey from house of commons to house of lords...I enjoyed the house of commons in Noida like anything. I used to share one joke everyday before court
Justice MR Shah: I have no regrets. I have performed my duties without fear or favour or ill will. I have tried to do justice to the common man and litigant who is waiting for his turn. I always tried to put myself in shoes of litigants.
Justice MR Shah: During that journey, if i hurt the feelings of anyone, even unknowingly, I say sorry. But believe that whatever I've done, I've done for the cause and the common man and the litigant.
Justice MR Shah: Try to appreciate and feel the difficulties by those litigants who come with high hopes. Treat the court as a temple of justice. Treat the judges as next to the god.
Justice MR Shah: It is the duty of everyone that timely justice is granted. It is request of everyone to get out of adjournment culture and not ask any unnecessary adjournments.
Justice MR Shah: Please do not waste your time in bar room or canteen. You should be in court to learn decorum, manners. Learn from seniors, know thy judges, work hard.
Justice Shah: I have played my innings very well. I have always followed my conscience. I have always believed in God and karma... I've never expected anything...I always followed Gita.
Justice Shah: God always helped me whenever I was in trouble. I also faced some problems but by grace of God, I faced them successfully. Only last year I suffered heart attack. But by grace of God and your best wishes, I could get out of it in 5 days...
Justice Shah: I'd be failing in my duty if I don't say thank you to my brother and sister judges...they are- Justice AK Sikri, Justice Arun Mishra, CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice Ashok Bhushan, Justice Subash Reddy, Justice BV Nagarathna, and Justice CT Ravikumar...
Justice Shah: I will be parting with full satisfaction. I'm only completing 65 years...just retiring today from an organisation. Retiring from an organisation just means that your work there is done. It doesn't mean that you should give up work.
Justice Shah: I will be playing fourth innings of my life. First innings were becoming an advocate, second innings at the bar, third innings as a judge of HC and CJ of Patna HC and judge of SC.
Justice Shah: Now, I'll be playing fourth innings of my life post 65 years. I am lucky that I'm going to be playing fourth innings... because of the grace of the god and blessings of my parents.
Justice Shah: I would like to quote Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former PM- "Jo kal the, woh aaj nahi hai. Jo Aaj hai woh kal nahi honge. Hone na hone ka kram issi tarah chalta rahega. Ham hain, ham rahenge, yeh bhram bhi sada chalta rahega."
