Only one member from the new Politburo Standing Committee, Ding Xuexiang, who is now the 6th-ranked member. Next in seniority is Wang Yi, promoted to the 25-member Politburo and takes over from Yang Jiechi as top diplomat.
For this to be high-powered, it would have included, at a minimum, 3 more members of the new Standing Committee--Li Qiang (2nd ranked after Xi), Zhao Leji (3rd ranked), and Wang Huning (4th-ranked). Wang spent a lot of time in the U.S. and is the architect of Xi's ideology
While #China will prioritize Taiwan, E/S China Seas, US, marginalization of #Africa/Global South is unlikely. The answer is in Xi's phrase "China leading the reform of global governance" which was adopted at 2018 Foreign Affairs' Work Conference. @ChinaGSProject
In Xi's political report to the 20th Congress, Taiwan appears 25 times. "Global" appears 38 times. While Africa/Global South not specifically mentioned, about 85% of issues discussed under "Global" are issues of the Global South, and Chinese leadership there.
A very interesting (and in my opinion, worthwhile) debate has emerged as to whether #Africa/Global South will be marginalized as @China dials up pressure on Taiwan reunification, Western Pacific, and U.S.
This is an entirely valid assessment that one of my good friends, Eric Olander discussed in the post below. But some nuance is required. See my additional comments in the next post after reading this. chinaglobalsouth.com/analysis/why-d…
