But I'm trying to backup my wife's iPhone vid/pic to my PC drive, and it's miserable.
Of course Appleites will say "just back up to iCloud!"

I've spent hours, on and off, trying various combinations of Microsoft's Photo app vs using iCloud app (which when it "syncs", creates local cloud links)
etc etc
Quickest way turns out to be:
Go to her ICloud, select a couple hundred at a time, and download the ZIP file....

TLDR that's been the most reliable way.
Her iCloud "sync" directory on my PC is difficult to copy, so I'm using a .NET Robocopy clone I wrote ages ago to brute-force it.
The ZIP download strategy is winning.
Get photos off her phone directly, you say?

Suffice to say:
I'm pretty OK technically, been a programmer for > 2 decades.
Getting >50GB of pics/vids off an iPhone via USB is....gorram awful, so unreliable.
Keeps disconnecting/erroring after a few or few dozen.

I don't know if I have a driver issue or what's happening, but stripping them off in explorer windows OR the command line....
Mucho errors.

WHAT IS THE GOAL?
It's to have local, non-cloud, RAID-10 copies of all our pics/vids.
I grab my Google stuff every few months; I wrote another program that does incremental pulls, and updates local folders with new stuff.
Working on same for her iCloud.
I hate Apple.

Have read half-dozen articles; turning off power saving, leaving Photos app open on iPhone, turning off screen lock, etc etc etc.

I just don't have these issues with my Samsung S21.
Plug it in (to a STANDARD USB cable) and drag/drop files.
Hundreds at a time if I want.
I hate Apple.

Here's irony:
I was a HUGE Apple fan from Day One.
In 1984, had an original Mac. Had that sucker all through college, upgraded to next one, until....
1995. Price/Performance of PC's was so incredibly better, and Win95 acceptable enough, I switched.
Now:
I hate Apple.

When DID Apple become the poster-child of Annoying Shitlib Companies?
Listen: they make some beautiful machines, and if you're ALL-IN, it's a nice ecosystem.
I just don't like its hermetic nature, shitlib connotations, slave labor, and expense.

In the spirit of fairness, I mostly agree.

FFS, guys, can Windows Explorer take less than 10 seconds to sort 1000 pics by date in a directory....on a FAST machine?
Little things like that really stick out to programmers.

OK it's done.
Instead of grabbing off phone, got everything off iCloud....
...by manually pulling 150-200 at a time in ZIP files, ripping locally.
Now have RAID-10 backup of her pics, past 3 years.
