🧵For context, this is the @latimes column I penned in August of 2022 that according to @TheAtlantic @TimAlberta's deep dive into CNN, had CEO Chris Licht bragging to his friends that he would "destroy" me.

Link: latimes.com/opinion/story/…
It's very revealing that a piece from an Asian American commentator elicited this kind of reaction. First of all, I stand by every single word I wrote. I believe the entire purpose of a news organization is to protect truth and fact, to keep its audience tethered to reality.
I believe telling the truth is not partisan. Reporting on facts is not partisan. Holding those in public office accountable for lying to their constituents is not partisan. Calling people who knowingly lie to voters “liars” is not partisan.
I believe that the greatest disservice a NEWS organization can do is place the liars on the same playing field as those who are committed to the truth. That both-siderism will only accelerate the further decline of our democracy.
I believe that there is no universe in which anything CNN does will convince the MAGA-universe to suddenly embrace them and to stop labeling organizations like CNN as "fake news."
I believe Republicans and Democrats are no longer two sides of the same coin. One side believes in democracy. The other is trying to expel it. One side believes in voting and the peaceful transition of power, the other encourages and condones violence.
These principles I wrote about provoked the CEO of CNN to declare his intention to "destroy" me. Think about that. Someone advocating for fact & truth. For democracy and the institution of the free press. That's who the top guy at CNN wants to "destroy."
Thankfully, there are many voices other than mine who deserve to be elevated - voices like @WajahatAli @DeeTwoCents @ElieNYC @ZerlinaMaxwell @mayawiley @JuanitaTolliver @Victorshi2020 etc. You can try & "destroy" me, but you cannot stop us all. Oh, and by the way, I'm still here.

🧵If you want an idea of the type of country Republicans are looking to create, take a look at how their party operates.

It is a place where if you vocalize any dissent, you will get canceled.
It is a place where if you disagree with their anointed one, you will get branded a traitor and endlessly threatened and harassed.

It is a place where if you follow the law, you will be designated as an outcast.
It is a place where if you prioritize facts, science & truth, you will be mocked and cast aside.

It is a place where if you put democracy first, you will be replaced.

Messaging Advice for Democrats: when talking about this historic #Infrastructure bill:

1.) Infrastructure = jobs. This is a job creation bill.

2.) Don’t get caught up in dollar figures - it’s not tangible enough to most Americans. Stick to language like “historic investment in”
3.) This bill is fully paid for. Period.

4.) #DemocratsDeliver more clean water to American families & to 400,000 schools.

5.) #DemsDeliver broadband internet access to millions of Americans who don’t currently have it.

6.) Most meaningful commitment to address Climate threat!
7.) Republicans just opposed building better roads, repairing bridges, expanding bus/train fleets, reducing gridlock, and improving fuel efficiency.

8.) GOP opposed clean air, clean water, safer environment for our children.

As I stand on this hallowed ground, I think about the lives of those who we lost, what their stories could have been, about the heroism of first-responders, and the remarkable demonstrations of unity that swept our nation.

#September11 #NeverForget thread
I then think about the #PatriotAct, the lies that brought us to an un-winnable war, the way Fox News used the fear brought on by #September11 to stoke division through fear, weaponize the notion of “liberty” & radicalize the GOP electorate.
I ask myself how would the victims and heroes of 9/11 feel about what happened at the United States Capitol on #January6th, not at the hands of Al-Qaeda or The Taliban, but by domestic terrorists incited by the Republican Party.

This morning, as I was helping with the set up for #ClimateForum2020, a Georgetown campus officer stopped me as I was coming back into the venue. I explained I was with the event and that there were people at the top of the stairwell who could vouch for my presence there.
He grabbed my arm (I’m on a flight of stairs). I pulled away and asked him, “why are you grabbing me? Just follow me and around the corner is the entire crew. Once there, he grabs my arm again. I pull away. He yells that I’ve “assaulted him” and then three officers tackle me.
They start yelling “stop resisting!” I’m not resisting, I’m not doing anything. Im tackled on the ground by three men much larger than me. I repeat “I am not resisting, what do you want me to do?” They tell me to move my arms in a position that is not physically possible.

1.) Pretty much my entire life I've been asked (primary by white people) the question that I imagine every "asian" person cringes at inside: "Where are you from?" I'm certain the person asking this is completely ignorant to how annoying this question is and why...
2.) Over time, I began to answer the question by saying "New York" or "California" - where I had spent my childhood and formative years - just to give the person the benefit of the doubt that they weren't going where I already knew they were...
3.) Inevitably, they would follow-up with some version of "no, I mean what is your background? Chinese or Japanese?" A.) WTF does it matter B.) Does anyone come up to you and ask - "hey, you Irish or German or Scottish or French or Dutch or etc...
