While returning from #Tripura, the pain of being Muslim in India refused to fade. Images of burnt houses and a destroyed mosque, the cries of mothers, and the fear in children’s eyes sent a chill down the spine. It is hard to understand how Hindutva hatred has reached even this remote state, where Muslims form less than 8 percent of the population.

On January 10, 2026, Musabbir Ali, a local timber merchant, was transporting a consignment of wood meant for a nearby mosque. Midway, he was intercepted. The timber was seized, and Musabbir was summoned by a group of Hindutva vigilantes. What followed was not a conversation, but a demand—₹50,000, forced upon him as a “donation” for a local Hindu event.
Musabbir asked for time. That hesitation became his crime.
He was beaten mercilessly. As blows rained down, he pleaded—reminding them that he had earlier donated timber worth ₹30,000 for the construction of a local temple. His words carried no weight. Violence had already decided his fate.
When his family rushed in to save him, Musabbir was barely conscious. His battered body was taken to Kailashahar Hospital, where he remained admitted for four to five days—his injuries speaking more truth than any testimony ever could.
But the violence did not end there.
As Musabbir lay in a hospital bed, a rumour was set loose—deliberately, methodically—that Muslims were preparing to attack a Hindu temple. Fear was manufactured. Hate was mobilised. Within hours, large groups of Hindutva supporters assembled, armed with suspicion and rage, and marched towards Semaltali village. +
The Hindutva mob stormed the partially constructed mosque, looted the sound system and other belongings, vandalised the premises, and ultimately set it on fire—burning copies of the Quran along with other religious texts. +
Walking across the narrow lanes at Bhainshwahi in Mandla, Madhya Pradesh and talking to those whose houses were bulldozed recently, one gets the pain of being a Muslim in world’s largest democracy. This is story of betrayal, injustice and selective communal bulldozing. A thread +
Bhainswahi is around 30 kms from Mandla. Nearest major railway station is Jabalpur from where Mandla is around 100kms. We reached Jabalpur on July 7 and straight away travelled to Bhainswahi to talk to these people whose houses were recently bulldozed+
Bhainswahi is an obscure small village dominated mostly by Muslims. The name itself came bhains or buffalo as most of the people were into dairy business. Later, some of them switched to scrap business as well. Once we entered the place, it felt like we entered a war zone+

Now, let’s see what Qur’an says
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلطَّارِقِ
By the sky and the Knocker
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلطَّارِقُ
And what can make you know what the Knocker is
ٱلنَّجْمُ ٱلثَّاقِبُ
It is the piercing star –
[Surah Tariq, ayah: 1-3]
+
In this Surah the word “طارق” stems from the root “طرق” meaning “knocking or striking”. In many translations of the Qur’an ,this word was taken as a name or as “the night comer”. The word may also mean “to pulsate” like beating heart. From which the word “طارق” is derived. +
Its shameful to see how campuses of AMU & Jamia Millia don’t even provide a space where issues concerning Muslims can be discussed & the communal role of the state can be brought to fore. My talk at Jamia Millia Islamia about the Delhi Pogrom 2020 was finally disrupted. A thread+
At 3:30 pm, I was visited at my office by a senior official of Delhi Police Special branch. He kept inquiring about the programme, the organiser & my talk. I told him very firmly that I will definitely talk about the communal role of Delhi police in handling the Pogrom+
At 5:15 , I reached the campus, only to find a heavy deployment of police outside gate-8. I managed to get in via another gate & finally reached the venue outside history lawn for the talk+ #DelhiPogrom
The Nellie massacre is still considered the worst pogrom after World War 2. It is also a classical example as to how the ruling congress made Muslims a sacrificial goat and then joined hands with the perpetrators , giving them state pardon. A thread-
The Nellie massacre took place in central Assam on 18 February 1983. The massacre claimed the lives of around 10,000 Muslims from 14 villages—Alisingha, Khulapathar, Basundhari, Bugduba Beel, Bugduba Habi, Borjola, Butuni, etc. & Nellie of Nagaon district+
In the assemble election of 1983, the Muslims voted in the favour of the congress. The AASU( all assam students union) called for boycott of election saying that many foreign nationals ( Bangladeshi Muslims) were given electoral rights+
