1/ There’ve been some scary climate charts released this week, alongside some big climate stories. It’s been challenging keeping up with everything, so I’ve done a quick round-up thread 🧵
#climatecrisis #climatechaos #climatebreakdown
2/ A snapshot of sea surface temperatures from the 14th June. Unfortunately this daily snapshot is representative of a larger ongoing problem…

3/ Sea surface temperatures are currently at record highs for June so far, and also for the months of April and May.

4/ North Atlantic sea surface temperatures have been breaking heat records since March.

5/ An extreme marine #heatwave is currently developing off the UK and Ireland, with water temperatures around 4-5C higher than normal.

6/ Other temperature records are also falling.

“Global-mean surface air temperatures for the first days of June 2023 were the highest – by a considerable margin - for the time of year.” - @WMO

7/ “Antarctic sea ice extent reached a record low monthly value in May, the third time in 2023 that the monthly value has reached a record low.” - @WMO

8/ @olliemilman reports that these global temperature spikes combined with an upcoming #ElNino are causing concerns that this may end up as the hottest year on record.

9/ Emissions continue to rise though.

“Carbon dioxide levels measured at NOAA’s Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii peaked at 424 parts per million in May, continuing a steady climb further into territory not seen for millions of years…” - @WMO

10/ NASA has released videos showing what CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels would look like.

There are three different videos from three different perspectives:
- Australia and Asia
- North and South America
- Africa, Europe and the Middle East

11/ $23m per minute. That’s how much we’re subsidising environmental destruction according to a new @WorldBank report.

Great thread and article by @dpcarrington.

12/ @antonioguterres (UN Secretary-General) pulls no punches yet again and calls out fossil fuel companies for hampering action on the climate crisis.

13/ @GeorgeMonbiot with another excellent article on how “the hard right and climate catastrophe are intimately linked.”

14/ A painful and stark irony from the UK as coal plant is used to help power our air con needs during this heatwave...

15/ Maybe this should have been done earlier than #COP28

“Fossil fuel lobbyists will have to identify themselves when registering for Cop28”
