🧵 1) Hit-and-run in San Francisco hurls pedestrian into the air, tossing her onto path of oncoming driverless Cruise car, which then runs her over.
Officials couldn't find witnesses, but Cruise car had cameras rolling.
I got access to the video. Here's what I saw.
@nbcbayarea
2) Accident happened at about 9:30pm Monday near 5th & Market streets in downtown SF. Driverless Cruise vehicle & other sedan were traveling side-by-side, southbound on 5th St, according to video recorded by Cruise car that was later shown to me. nbcbayarea.com/news/local/san…
3) The roughly 20 second clip showed the entirety of the accident as well as the moments leading up to it. The video begins with both vehicles stopped at a red light. Once the traffic light turns green, both vehicles continue south along Fifth Street.
4) The sedan, which was in the left lane, ultimately hits the pedestrian shortly after crossing over Market Street. The woman, who was not in a cross walk, was tossed over the right ride of the sedan and thrown into the right lane, where the Cruise car was traveling.
5) "The [autonomous vehicle] then braked aggressively to minimize the impact," said Navideh Forghani, a Cruise spokesperson. "The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene, and at the request of the police the [autonomous vehicle] was kept in place."
6) Rescuers found the woman pinned beneath the left rear axel of the Cruise vehicle, according to San Francisco Fire Dept. Captain Justin Schorr. After Cruise disabled the car remotely, rescuers were then "able to get the car up off her" and used the jaws of life to free her.
7) The woman suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, according to first responders. Her current condition is still unknown.
8) Cruise tells the NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit it is turning over video of the accident to the San Francisco Police Department, which is now investigating the crash.
9) The California DMV, which is responsible for regulating autonomous vehicles across the state, was already in the midst of investigating Cruise's safety record after what the agency described as "recent concerning incidents."
10) The DMV launched its probe back in August, following a collision between a Cruise vehicle & a San Francisco fire truck. Per the DMV's request, Cruise agreed to cut its San Francisco fleet of driverless cars in half, limiting the company to just 50 cars/day and 150 cars/night.
11) The DMV, which has the power to order driverless vehicles off the road by suspending or revoking their permits, has yet to issue any findings relating to its Cruise investigation or release a timeline of when it plans to do so.

🧵 2/ We were the first today to obtain the video & audio evidence used in the criminal case against David DePape. Now that it's out, let's talk about all that we know regarding that gruesome attack against Paul Pelosi, husband of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
I’m inside the San Francisco courtroom for David DeDape’s preliminary hearing - the man accused of breaking into Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home and beating her husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer.
1/ #Scoop: Two major law enforcement agencies investigating #Pelosi attack can't agree on who opened the door once San Francisco police arrived:
Dept. of Justice:
"The 2 officers opened the door..."
SF DA's Office:
"Mr. Pelosi opened the door with his left hand..." @nbcbayarea
2/ A source familiar w/ the investigation, who personally watched the police body camera video, tells us SF DA's office got it right, adding that the video shows police knocking the door, then backing away. Door then opens from the inside and you can see Paul Pelosi opening it.
3/ Does who opened the door matter? We have no reason to believe it does, but with so many conspiracy theories already swirling online, contradicting stories from investigators are only fueling falsehoods.
DOJ & DA's office did not respond to our request for comment.
🧵#Exclusive#Scoop 1/ San Francisco DA Brooke Jenkins sat down w/ us for a wide-ringing, one-on-one interview, her first since the election.
We spoke about the criticism she's facing, the Paul Pelosi attack, & her plans to end "lawlessness."
2/ Jenkins says as DA, "all crime" is now considered illegal in San Francisco.
She says her predecessor Chesa Boudin (recalled by voters in June) ordered staff not to pursue charges for quality of life crimes (i.e. graffiti), resisting arrest, & certain assaults against cops.
3/ We contacted former District Attorney Chesa Boudin to get his response to Jenkins' criticism of his office.
#BREAKING 🧵 1/ San Francisco District Attorney @BrookeJenkinsSF releases new details about attack on Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi.
She says David Depape broke a glass door to get into the Pelosi's SF home, went to 2nd floor to find Paul Pelosi sleeping in bed.
2/ Charges against Depape include attempted murder, residential burglary, assault w/ a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder as well as threats to a public official and their family.
DA says Depape woke up Paul Pelosi and wanted to know where his wife was.
3/ Mr. Pelosi was wearing a "loose-fitting pajama shirt & boxer shorts" when he was forced to get out of bed. He tried to access a phone in his home elevator, but Depape is accused of blocking him. Later, Pelosi asked to use bathroom and was able to call 911 with his cell phone.
