🧵So far on X the unconfirmed report about 40 murdered babies have at least 44 million impressions, 300k likes, over 100k reposts (retweets). The key propagators of the story were @i24NEWS_EN and @Israel, the story was based on a report by @Nicole_Zedek
The original report never claimed 40 babies were decapitated. Zedek reported that soldiers told her that up to '40 babies/children' were killed and '40 babies were taken out on gurneys'. She also stated on X that some babies heads had been cut off. However, those reports, which
came from an IDF soldier(s), have in some cases morphed and gone viral. Some outlets are reporting '40 babies killed', or '40 babies beheaded', while some are reporting '40 babies killed, some beheaded'. Neither the 40 babies being killed and/or beheaded has been independently
verified. Indeed, Sky News have said the IDF have refused to confirm the news. Meanwhile, some highly influential people are continuing to spread the news, including @jk_rowling - who has over 13 million followers. There is no doubt that civilians have been brutally massacred,
but narratives around slaughtered babies are particularly emotive and useful in propaganda and jingoism- historically (from WW1, to false information around the invasion of Iraq in 1990). A reminder to be careful of what you share, especially during live reporting
Regardless of how you frame this there is clearly misleading information around two things
a) ages killed (Zedek said 'babies/children')
b) how they were killed (some/all beheaded).
The lack or clarity & consistency, singular sourcing is enough to indicate caution with the story
It's also worth noting that some people have contributed to the narrative by trying to denounce it as propaganda, misrepresenting the original reporting by claiming Zidek explicitly said 40 babies were all beheaded.
In terms of methods for the analytics, I downloaded all tweets in the past 4 days that used the term '40 babies' with a minimum of 5 retweets (this is due to API limits). So, as I mentioned, the impressions, retweets, are a lowball number.
Just a sample of today's UK papers. The @MetroUK literally has 40 babies murdered as a headline along with an Israeli soldier holding a puppy. The Times isn't specific in the headline, but specifies that the babies throats were cut
The Daily Express has led with the beheading story, and the Sun have also included it on the front page. i and Telegraph also include the story on the front page.
Most of the papers trace the source back to the Zidek/ I24news report

1/ I've seen thousands of ppl sharing this awful video of an injured/deceased woman with very few clothes on, being driven away on a truck. Some are saying it's 'fake' or 'old'. The context is not entirely clear but analysis does indicate it's in Gaza. See thread for geolocation
A clip of the video shows that it's outside AlShafooh Bakery (photo on left). It has a distinctive red/orange structure. You can see images of Al Shafooh bakery online (see photo on right). Note the distinctive red/orange frame.
As far as I know there's only one such Al Shafooh bakery and it's in Northern Gaza, not far from the Erez crossing where some of today's operations took place.
🧵After noticing many comments doubting the accusations against #RussellBrand, it made me wonder about soc media algorithms & misogyny. So I did an experiment. What I found was pretty disturbing ≈ 70% of highest ranked comments seemed suspicious about accusations against Brand
2/ I used Crowdtangle to download all the Facebook posts from verified news organisations reporting the #RussellBrand story. I then sorted them by the number of comments. I analysed the top 5 'most relevant' comments on the 25 most commented on posts.
3/ Approximately 74 of the 105 top 5 'most relevant' comments fell into one or more of the following categories
a) Solidarity with Brand
b) Charges are political because Brand challenges 'establishment'
c) Questioning the motives/actions of the victims
1) So @MuhammedKambal and @khalidalbaih raised concerns about a piece of sketchy news being shared by pro-RSF accounts in #Sudan. The news claims to be from a site called @EuroPostAgency The site is clearly part of a #disinformation network. I will highlight some things here >
2) Firstly, the news being shared indicates that the Sudanese army had some meeting with Boko Haram, considered by many states to be a terrorist organisation. A fairly obvious attempt to smear by association. Fits with pro-RSF propaganda
3) Anyway. the website looks professionally produced with some decent design. It even has the option to subscribe for the excellent price of only $1 per month. Oh Europost, you do spoil us. I subscribed with a burner email but no result! Dig deeper and things get even stranger...
🧵Thread 1/ The many faces of #disinformation on Medium. I wanted to do a thread to show how disinformation fake accounts on Medium follow a remarkably similar pattern to Twitter. Also bonus content on anti-Muslim brotherhood narratives.
Does anyone Remember Samantha Ali?
2/ Of course you might!
Samantha Ali was the face of a recent campaign to spread climate-related propaganda around the UAE hosting Cop28.
Only then she wasn't Samantha Ali, she was Rebecca Klein. She changed profile pictures and bio after the expose. But she's still verified!
3/ Ali/Klein was one of dozens. Despite the obvious fakery (that was even covered in @guardian ) she is still active on Twitter. What's more, thanks to the wonders of algorithms, Twitter is even recommending I follow her. How meta! (Not you Zuckerberg, the other guy @elonmusk)
🧵1/ Ready for a sockpuppet odyssey that goes from Twitter to Medium? Meet Rebecca Klein. She's an 'Israel' based in Dubai, has a fantastic set of chompers, & a verified account. She also loves the UAE, and by the looks of things, spaghetti junctions. #deception#disinformation
2/ Klein was part of a network promoting Cop28 in UAE. Following my thread, the network took evasive action, changing their usernames (this is called handle switching). As you can see, Klein became Samantha Ali.
Also, 'Forgetting Rebecca Klein' is a great movie title.
3/ Some of you may know that everyone has a unique Twitter ID. This ID remains the same even if you change your username. So if you know the unique ID, you know the new username
Amazingly, Samantha Ali has already got her verification back. Her bio has changed slightly though.
🧵1/There is a large, multilingual astroturfing effort around #Cop28 on Twitter right now involving at least 100 fake accounts. The accounts in question are promoting UAE foreign policy, bashing UAE's enemies, and burnishing the UAE's environmental record #deception#greenwashing
2/ Many use stolen photos - either stock photos or those found on the web. They have fully fleshed out bios, including location (usually somewhere in the UAE). Another common tactic is to tag real accounts like @amnesty in the bio to give an air of credibility and plausibility.
3/ For example. Yael Fadel is a space scientist from Cyprus who erm, has tagged @NASA in her bio. I can only assume she works for NASA (hey guys can you confirm?) . When she's not also a stock photo model used by orthodontists, she's subtweeting the Muslim Brotherhood
