It's been brought to my attention that many Ontario NDP members and members of other communities are under the impression that there was a vote, consensus, or agreement between leadership & the Ontario NDP Caucus, of which I am a member, to remove MPP Sarah Jama from caucus...🧵
It's also been brought to my attention that people have been specifically told by leadership in various conversations that I supported the decision to remove MPP Sarah Jama from the Ontario NDP Caucus. I did not support this decision for a variety of reasons.
I learned about this decision on Monday, October 23, 2023 at 11:11AM via email while sitting in my MPP seat in the legislature, when the decision was already made. The subsequent press release stated with support of our Ontario NDP MPPs a decision was made to remove the member.
The release went on to conjure what I feel were stereotypical tropes often used to communicate about Black people, especially Black women, who are perceived as difficult. I expressed my concerns about this release to the leadership team and to my caucus members.
I want to make it clear that I also informed leadership on Monday, October 23, 2023 and my caucus colleagues on Tuesday October 24, 2023 that I would be making this statement. Thank you.

ICYMI: Naming someone's behaviour or something they've said anti-Black, racist, Islamophobic, antisemitic, homophobic, transphobic etc is NOT bullying. Stating that someone's behaviour or something they've said is supporting racism, ableism etc is NOT bullying.
Sometimes when ple who say something, share beliefs, or act in a way that's racist, homophobic etc get confronted they CRY😢.
They may cry b/c they're embarrassed, pissed they got 'called out' or sometimes they are sincerely sorry (or confused). Their tears do NOT 🟰 bullying.
These tears are sometimes referred to as 'white tears' to explain the tears of a white person who may have been called out for racist words, thoughts, or behaviours and therefore feels 'attacked.'
( Ps. "heternormative tears" "able-bodied tears" "rich tears" are close cousins.)
THREAD ALERT: Auditor General's Report demonstrates that @fordnation 'back door' pandemic response was mismanaged and full of decision delays, disregarding *health experts* (heck it wasn't even led by them!) all which made for a more deadly and longer #COVID situation. #onpoli
.@fordnation failed to implement 85% of recommendations of emergency readiness. History repeating itself w both Liberal & Cons ignoring recommendations from the SARS commission. Ford's "command table" was more like a disorganized free for all! #onpoli
Ford's "Command Table" had up to 500 members - way larger than other provinces. They had LIMITED documentation (transparency anyone?), it was NO LET BY HEALTH EXPERTS, and Public Health was ignored with hospital CEOs and ON govt staffers having more weight at the table. #onpoli
THREAD: The fake sincerity of @fordnation is genuinely enraging. He wants to act like he 'cares' so much - but is going to force kids into classrooms of 30+ DURING A PANDEMIC. #onpoli#onted
Never forget - this supposedly 'compassionate' man also:
➡️Gutted public health
➡️Cancelled basic income pilot
➡️Cut funding to rape crisis centres
➡️Eliminated 3 safe injection sites
➡️Stopped the 50 million tree program
➡️Slashed the Indigenous Culture Fund
➡️Reduced funding for Legal Aid
➡️Is making it easier to evict people (DURING A PANDEMIC)
➡️Cut funding for 1000s of new teachers
➡️Cancelled rent control in new apartments
➡️Slashed Toronto City Council in half
➡️Walked away from $100 million to repair schools
1/ For those of you who don't support the PCs but have been wondering how "Sarah" got your number, here's a PSA:
2/ The list comes from the Canadian Numbering Administrator & it's publicly available. People accessing this list receive the area code + first three digits of a phone number. For example, 647-484-XXXX. After that, it's guesswork: 0000, 0001,etc. That's why even Jagmeet got this:
3/ As the robocaller dials all possible combinations of the last 4 digits, a computer waits for your response. If you respond at all, they now know that your number is real and that information gets put into their database.
HOUSING THREAD: 1/My office has been getting calls and emails from tenants about A/C charges. Landlords are demanding tenants pay $2-$300 dollars in order to operate an air conditioner. The main question we’re getting – is this legal? Let’s break it down.
2/Landlords can charge a monthly fee to tenants with air conditioners if they have done so every year you’ve been a tenant, or if this is your first year of tenancy. This fee must be monthly, and must be only for cost recovery for the landlord.
3/Landlords are not allowed to charge their tenants a one time fee for an air conditioner.
Landlords cannot introduce a charge for something that has been previously included in the rent.
A landlord cannot remove something that was previously provided to you.
