1/ We just released a new report titled “Biden’s Fossil Fuel Fail: How U.S. Oil + Gas Supply Rises under the Inflation Reduction Act, Exacerbating Environmental Injustice.”
2/ The IRA & Biden's policies fail to reduce oil + gas production or alleviate impact on environmental justice communities.
How do we know?
We examined previously unpublished data by @Rhodium_Group an independent research group that analyzes U.S. energy + emissions under IRA.
3/ The model predicts a decrease in demand for oil + gas in the U.S. — but U.S. oil production increases by 13% and gas production rises by 7%. That’s not how we #EndFossilFuels.
4/ How is it possible for oil + gas production to increase while demand decreases? Oil + gas exports, already at record levels, are projected to soar.
Gas exports could DOUBLE by 2035, while oil + petroleum product exports could rise by 23%. #EndFossilFuels
5/ Why does it matter? The IRA almost certainly won’t be enough for the US to reach its climate goals. The data suggests a 16-18% gap in reaching @potus' 2030 emission reductions target and even further from 1.5• aligned Paris Agreement, in part to our refusal to #EndFossilFuels
6/ Failing to #EndFossilFuels hurts communities in areas of oil + gas production, processing, + exports.
Black, Brown, Indigenous + poor communities, esp. in Appalachia, Gulf Coast + Permian Basin, are disproportionately hit by pollution, climate disasters, + health impacts.
7/ This deadly combo — boosting fossil fuel production + export while exacerbating pollution in EJ communities — makes a mockery of the IRA’s “climate bill” label + Biden’s claims of U.S. “climate leadership.” #EndFossilFuels
➡️ Indigenous resistance has stopped or delayed greenhouse gas pollution equivalent to at least one-quarter of annual U.S. and Canadian emissions.
➡️ Indigenous resistance to carbon over the past decade has stopped projects equivalent to 400 new coal-fired power plants, or roughly 345 million new passenger vehicles.
@antonioguterres "Pursuit of profit over the wellbeing of humanity is not right, it is unjust," says Samoan Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa. "The time has come to truly commit to climate action!" #ClimateAmbitionSummit @samoagovt
600,000 people.
700 actions.
65 countries.
All 7 continents.
THIS. IS. INCREDIBLE.
But numbers don't do it justice. This is a big, beautiful climate movement & we're calling on world leaders to #EndFossilFuels NOW. No more talk, we need action!
Even more pictures of actions around the world over the past few days call on leaders to #EndFossilFuels!
And here are a few more #EndFossilFuels action photos! So many amazing actions!
Tomorrow, global fossil fuel pusher General Electric (GE) is holding its annual ‘investor conference’, a high-stakes event at which the company will try to paint itself as a green, clean energy leader to investors. @generalelectric and @GE_Vernova risk hurting communities
“Throughout #COP27, civil society has demanded we #PhaseOutFossils & called for rich countries to pay up for climate debt. People power will force an equitable end to fossil fuels + just transition to renewable energy.”
"We need to include all fossils & we want stronger language on the ban of expansion of new extraction & production. To be serious about keeping 1.5 alive we need to include those targets in the cover decision by the end of today" - H.E. Mr. Seve Paeniu, Min' of Finance, Tuvalu
"The energy & equity outcomes of COP go hand in hand. Keeping 1.5 alive means accelerating the equitable phase out of coal, oil & gas. We need a strong outcome that builds on Glasgow & acknowledges the science. If we don't see that, we'll be calling #COP27 a failure" - @catabreu_
"Fossil companies present at COP have affected the decisions made. Lack of consideration for oil & gas phase out shows this COP has failed African people. We need stronger text around fossils - this is a major backtrack from last year" - Lorraine Chiponda
