I'm completely NOT on the manufactured rage bandwagon re the statements of MIT, Harvard, & Penn Presidents. In part because I actually heard their full testimony, but in part because I know what they did and what they did not do. Before you attack me read my 🧵 to the end 👇🏼
1/n I do want to start by reminding all that the University Presidents did NOT do:
- The University Presidents did not kill, rape or abduct Israelis on October 7th
- They also did not bomb Gaza or kill thousands of Palestinian children & innocent adults
2/n
- The University Presidents did not ignore intelligence on a potential Hamas attack on southern Israel, or transfer Israeli military units from Southern Israel to support settlers' pogroms.
- The University Presidents did not perform terror attacks against Jews anywhere
3/n
- The University Presidents did not shoot missiles or attack Israel from its borders with Lebanon or Syria
- The University Presidents did not ask Qatar to fund Hamas, in order to weaken the Palestinian Authority, prevent progress on a state
4/n
- The University Presidents did not engage in a campaign to eliminate Israeli democracy, nor did they appoint racist ministers to the Israeli government.
In fact they NEVER did ANYTHING that undermined the security, safety and wellbeing of Israelis or Palestinians).
5/n
What did they do?
The University presidents did their job.
They addressed the needs of multiple constituencies on their campuses, largely maintained their campuses safe, without overtly suppressing student expression,
while facing immense pressures, bullying
6/n
Sadly the anguish experienced by students & communities, facing a rise in antisemitism &islamophobia, has been weaponized by bigots, populists & enemies of science & democracy to saw distrust, destroy US academia that peaked in a congressional hearing on December 6th
7/n
You may have heard misrepresentations of the statements made by University Presidents. But fortunately, we have @cspan - so you can listen for yourself - here are the three opening statements:
8/n
Listen to the statement by Claudine Gay, the President of Harvard. She states her objection to antisemitism, her shock at Hamas atrocities, the actions she took to secure the campus, with sincerity, courage & humility. Why did she deserve the hate? c-span.org/video/?c509672…
9/n
Then, listen to the statement by Sally Kornbluth, the President of MIT (who is Jewish). It clear, sincere and powerful. And it makes you wonder why wasn't this statement highlighted? Why was she attacked? c-span.org/video/?c509687…
10/n And here is the statement by Elizabeth Magill, President of Penn, she also does not mince words; condemns Hamas atrocities and antisemitism and describes the action she took, Did she deserve to be humiliated, attached, and shamed? c-span.org/video/?c509687…
11/n
Truth is - none of these highly accomplished, superbly effective women academic leaders deserved this public shaming.
This was a highly orchestrated circus, in the tradition of the public hearings of the House Committee on Un-American Activities & the McCarthy Years.
12/n
It is scary to think that people I know; honest, thoughtful, good people, join the bandwagon of hate against the women University Presidents.
Not because of things they did
But because of a perception of what they did not say.
I hope listening to them helps.

Attn @PresidentATS@CHESTPrez, @SCCMPresident - societies that hold conferences in states unsafe for women, LGBTQ, minorities, will lose them.
This👇🏼is already happening!
The following thread is inspired by
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Prof Jamieson for courage & leadership #ConferenceLocation🧵
1/n When I posted my 11 tweets about going to national/international conferences in locations that have draconian #AbortionBans, I thought this was temporary, that societies, while having past commitments, will recognize this as an issue and change future locations. I was wrong

This is a 🧵about events that happened 40 years ago in Israel.
I was a freshman student at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem & attended a demonstration.
The demonstration ended with the murder of Emil Grunzweig, an Israeli teacher & peace activist. #RememberEmil
2/n The demonstration was against Israel’s criminal war on Lebanon, requesting accountability for those responsible for the Sabra & Shatila Massacre. We gathered in Jerusalem’s city center, marched with torches to hold a vigil near the Prime Minister's Office #RememberEmil
3/n Our march encountered violent Rt wing counterprotests. I still remember the hateful faces, the spitting, the friends who got beaten, I also remember the “It’s a pity Hitler did not finish the work” Shouts. These were Jews shouting. I will never forget that. #RememberEmil

FINALLY OUT! "Airway basal cells show a dedifferentiated KRT17⬆️ Phenotype & promote fibrosis in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis"
In the following 🧵I explain some of the key findings of this Herculean work and why I'm so excited
#CureIPF #IPFABC nature.com/articles/s4146…
2/n
In follow up to our previous work showing that airway basal signatures in BAL were markers of mortality (), Prof Prasse's team profiled IPF airway basal cells by #SCRNAseq & showed they were very different from normals
#IPFABC atsjournals.org/doi/10.1164/rc… nature.com/articles/s4146…
3/n
Airway basal cells from IPF patients were also very functionally different, they made more organoids,m and had an impact on fibroblasts. Suggesting that they could be PROFIBROTIC - but could they drive fibrosis in-vivo?
#CureIPF #IPFABC nature.com/articles/s4146…
1/n September Pulmonary Fibrosis controversy thread about #IPFandGERD preprint from Dr. Cosetta Minelli's group: Two tweets from really good people say "GERD Causes IPF" (@IPFdoc, @drcjar), and a 3rd (@LungDrE) says: "Not based on your data".
3/n #IPFandGERD Paper obviously needs #PeerReview. But there is context.
As a non-expert, in reading Mendelian Randomization studies I go back to the superb Guide to reading Mendelian randomization studies from Prof Davey Smith & team. Especially that 👇🏼 bmj.com/content/362/bm…
1/n Our #SaracatinibPaper is FINALLY out - we establish the case for repurposing Saracatinib, a SRC Kinase Inhibitor (prev tried in cancer & Alzheimer's) as a potential therapeutic in IPF, based on in-silico, in-vitro, in-vivo, and ex-vivo data #CureIPF atsjournals.org/doi/10.1164/rc…
2/n #InSilico - Using connectivity between disease transcriptional signatures & compound signatures suggested that Saracatinib may be an effective antifibrotic (⬆️ than currently, @FDA approved drugs) #SaracatinibPaper atsjournals.org/doi/10.1164/rc…
3/n #InVitro - Saracatinib inhibited TGFB1 fibrotic effects on normal human lung fibroblast - including
Smad3 phosphorylation, stress fiber formation, and fibrotic gene expression programs #BetterThanFDAApprovedDrugs #SaracatinibPaper atsjournals.org/doi/10.1164/rc…
1/n So, what do I think, as a non-expert, son to holocaust survivors, about @VPrasadMDMPH's article, claiming #COVID19 restrictions could be used as blueprint for a future totalitarian regime, his analogy to Hitler's rise in Germany. @GYamey says it better
2/n Frankly, not much. My approach is, if you want to understand threats to democracy go to experts (I am not, @VPrasadMDMPH is DEFINITELY NOT) there are really good books, like @TimothyDSnyder's #OnTyranny. Check out this clip
