Over 100 Yale faculty released a public letter to the future president of @Yale urging a steadfast commitment to academic freedoms, diversity, and progress.
In this 🧵 I outline the main points:
#YaleFuture
#LetterToNextYalePresident

Reject attacks that aim to undermine Yale’s mission and belittle importance of work on topics previously ignored, such as race, sexuality, gender, social & environmental justice, and civil & human rights.

Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber's "State of the University Letter" is a superb call for action against "virulent threats to academic freedom and institutional autonomy" saying #WeMustSpeakUp.
I agree!
see 🧵below
Full letter

After discussing briefly the turbulence of the last 3 months on US campuses, Eisgruber says it as it is: The outrage about antisemitism was used to attack progress in diversity, inclusion, and equity in US Universities.
I agree ( )

I'm completely NOT on the manufactured rage bandwagon re the statements of MIT, Harvard, & Penn Presidents. In part because I actually heard their full testimony, but in part because I know what they did and what they did not do. Before you attack me read my 🧵 to the end 👇🏼 1/n
I do want to start by reminding all that the University Presidents did NOT do:
- The University Presidents did not kill, rape or abduct Israelis on October 7th
- They also did not bomb Gaza or kill thousands of Palestinian children & innocent adults

Attn @PresidentATS @CHESTPrez, @SCCMPresident - societies that hold conferences in states unsafe for women, LGBTQ, minorities, will lose them.
This👇🏼is already happening!
The following thread is inspired by
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Prof Jamieson for courage & leadership #ConferenceLocation🧵 ImageImageImage 1/n
When I posted my 11 tweets about going to national/international conferences in locations that have draconian #AbortionBans, I thought this was temporary, that societies, while having past commitments, will recognize this as an issue and change future locations. I was wrong

This is a 🧵about events that happened 40 years ago in Israel.
I was a freshman student at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem & attended a demonstration.
The demonstration ended with the murder of Emil Grunzweig, an Israeli teacher & peace activist. #RememberEmil 2/n The demonstration was against Israel’s criminal war on Lebanon, requesting accountability for those responsible for the Sabra & Shatila Massacre. We gathered in Jerusalem’s city center, marched with torches to hold a vigil near the Prime Minister's Office

FINALLY OUT! "Airway basal cells show a dedifferentiated KRT17⬆️ Phenotype & promote fibrosis in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis"
In the following 🧵I explain some of the key findings of this Herculean work and why I'm so excited

In follow up to our previous work showing that airway basal signatures in BAL were markers of mortality (), Prof Prasse's team profiled IPF airway basal cells by #SCRNAseq & showed they were very different from normals

1/n September Pulmonary Fibrosis controversy thread about #IPFandGERD preprint from Dr. Cosetta Minelli's group: Two tweets from really good people say "GERD Causes IPF" (@IPFdoc, @drcjar), and a 3rd (@LungDrE) says: "Not based on your data".

Who is right? 2/n I read the preprint (medrxiv.org/content/10.110…); A Mendelian Randomization (MR) study using summary stats of GERD GWAS gut.bmj.com/content/71/6/1… & IPF GWAS meta-analysis thorax.bmj.com/content/77/8/8….
Shows OR of 1.6 GERD➡️IPF & 0.99 IPF➡️GERD. So what do I think?

1/n Our #SaracatinibPaper is FINALLY out - we establish the case for repurposing Saracatinib, a SRC Kinase Inhibitor (prev tried in cancer & Alzheimer's) as a potential therapeutic in IPF, based on in-silico, in-vitro, in-vivo, and ex-vivo data #CureIPF

1/n So, what do I think, as a non-expert, son to holocaust survivors, about @VPrasadMDMPH's article, claiming #COVID19 restrictions could be used as blueprint for a future totalitarian regime, his analogy to Hitler's rise in Germany. @GYamey says it better 2/n Frankly, not much. My approach is, if you want to understand threats to democracy go to experts (I am not, @VPrasadMDMPH is DEFINITELY NOT) there are really good books, like @TimothyDSnyder's #OnTyranny. 1/n This thread is not about Medicine, Science or Lung Disease. It’s about what you should ask when when you hear about another cycle of violence in #IsraelPalestine. Written in #Solidarity with the Jews & Arabs who today stand together against racism & hate #TrueHeroes 2/n When people speak about “country x’s right to defend itself” - what you should ask, does the leadership of country x have the right to provoke violence? and do the actions taken really constitute defense or serve another agenda? #KnowWhatToAsk #IsraelPalestine

1/n Usually we invite friends/colleagues to our SEDER, but no guests last & this year. Inspired by FB comment by @gregggonsalves I thought it’d be fun to share our dishes with #MedTwitter friends as if we’re together - see following thread #PCCMEats #HappyPassover2021 2/n Every item on the Seder Plate has a symbolic meaning in the ceremonial retelling of the Exodus story - except the Orange, a recent addition dedicated to #inclusion of those marginalized in traditional religions (women, LGBTQ) #NKsSederTweetorial #PCCMEats #HappyPassover2021

1/n The #IPFCellAtlas is finally out! 1/n Dr. Mark Siegel is a superb critical care physician, ethicist & legendary Internal Medicine Residency Program Director whose weekly notes I read eagerly. This week’s note is titled “what I’d say to new interns” #MarksWisdom #TipsForNewDocs #MedEd

Reopening thread to our patients 1/8 (relevant also friends, neighbors, family, peers, all) - many years ago, a veteran of many wars told me that the days of ceasefire were very dangerous. This was because precautions were lifted but risk was still there (see next) #COVID19 Reopening thread to our patients 2/8 - During ceasefires soldiers & civilians are often injured because they let down their guards, while local commanders are not aware of ceasefire or simply disregard it. Do not let your guards down - #COVID19 is not gone yet #KeepSafe
