I made a #FOIA request to @fbi for records indexed for the term "Santa Claus." FBI claims I did not provide enough info, and asked for Santa's DOB, addresses, employment, and information about any FBI investigations into #Santa. I'm not making this up.
Here is my response.
While the request is whimsical, it illustrates a common violation by the FBI: refusing to conduct searches that specify methodology and search terms. The irony is that this method of requesting is easier for FBI because there is no responsiveness review to be conducted.

We're about to enter another #foia#sunshineweek. Compliance still sucks. It will only get better when requesters and attorneys adopt a zero tolerance policy. Every single FOIA violation is nothing less than an affront and threat to our democracy and should be taken to court.
Seriously, every single one. Imagine how untenable this widespread pattern of #FOIA abuse would become, both for agencies and the courts.
So this Sunshine Week, we recommit to representing #FOIA requesters, at no charge when necessary, for every FOIA violation, whether big or small. If you're in a jurisdiction we can't cover (and we can cover many), we will do everything we can to find you a local attorney.
