A thread on raw vs pasteurized milk. Pasteurized milk is milk from dairy animals heated to 63C for 30 minutes or 71 C for 15 seconds before cooling. It kills bacteria in raw milk that are harmful to humans including Campylobacter, E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella, Listeria etc.1/n
Pasteurizing milk prevents bacterial infections and saves lives. Infection with these and other bacteria can cause food poisoning. The symptoms can be mild but can also cause serious illness. 2/n
Children infected with E. coli O157:H7 can develop hemolytic uremic syndrome which is life threatening. Pregnant women infected with Listeria are at greater risk of miscarriage, as well as illness and death of newborns.3/n
Viruses can be detected in unpasteurized milk. Bird flu, aka H5N1 influenza was first confirmed in U.S. dairy cattle in March '24 and is spreading widely especially in California. High levels of the virus have been found in the milk of infected cows. Pasteurization kills viruses including H5N1. 4/n
Pasteurizing milk does not lead to lactose intolerance and does not strip raw milk of its nutritional value. Both raw and pasteurized milk trigger allergic reactions in people who have an allergy to milk proteins. Raw milk is not probiotic and does not reduce the likelihood of asthma. 5/n
Some people believe that it’s safe for them to consume raw milk because they grew up consuming it and never got sick. A serious infection can occur at any time. 6/n
In Canada, all milk sold to the public must be pasteurized and packaged in a licensed dairy plant. Only vitamins A and D may be added to the milk for health benefits. 7/n
A '22 US study found jurisdictions that permit the sale of unpasteurized milk have 3.2x the # of dairy-borne outbreaks compared to those that don’t. State laws that increase availability of non-pasteurised milk are associated with > outbreaks & illnesses. 8/n pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC99…
If you consume raw milk see a healthcare provider if you get symptoms of food poisoning like vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain or flu-like symptoms like fever, headache, and body aches and pains. 9/n
Parents watch kids for symptoms of food poisoning. If you’re pregnant and believe you may have consumed raw milk products, see a health-care provider immediately. 10/n
Butter and cheese made from raw milk is safer to consume because the fermentation and production process kills some harmful pathogens. However, unpasteurized butter and cheese must be aged before it can be sold in Canada. 11/n
Pasteurization DOES NOT mean that it is safe to leave milk out of the refrigerator for extended time, particularly after it has been opened. 12/n END

A thread on #BlackPlastic. Black plastic refers to products made of plastic coloured black due to the addition of carbon black. The latter is produced by the partial combustion of petroleum products. It’s to make the plastic stiffer and less likely to degrade. 1/n
Black plastics are found in consumer products including kitchen utensils, kids toys, coffee lids, take-out food containers, office supplies like pens and staplers, computers and cellphone cases, garbage and recycling containers, and small appliances. 2/n
The most hazardous form of black plastic comes from recycled electronic devices like cellphones and computer sleeves…which contain brominated flame retardants or BFRs. 3/n

A few weeks ago I called @KatharineSmart into question for her use of the term “collapse” because I didn’t look closely enough to see the outlines. I now believe we’re a lot closer to collapse than I realized.
1. ER intermittent closures have been normalized. 2. RNs are leaving in droves and hospitals can’t replace them or spend millions patching a roster.
3. Front line MDs and other professionals are exhausted and see no light at the end of the tunnel. 4. Primary care is buried in paperwork and disrespected by the provinces.

Been thinking about ‘pandemic acceptance.’ The world has divided itself into those who accept it’s a multi-year incursion into our lives and those who won’t or have failed to do so yet.
It’s like:
1. Living through a long course of cancer treatment and surveillance.
2. Like having a loved one newly diagnosed with dementia at the beginning of that awful road.

Me and @TheSGEM spent 60 hours in the US visiting @startrektour to wish @WilliamShatner a #HappyBirthday. Here are some random thoughts on #Masks in a post-vaccination US with #DeltaVariant /1
@startrektour is in Ticonderoga in Eastern NY State. Pop 3,000 with 500 + visitors from NY State, surrounding states & as far away as California. At registration, @startrektour asked for proof of double vax status. I have no idea if they turned non-vaxed attendees away. /2
At indoor events masks were optional. @sgem & I wore masks all times. Max 5-10% wore masks. At packed event at local high school aud very few wore one. At #HappyBirthday dinner for @WilliamShatner @TheSGEM and I were the only ones wearing masks /3

Me and @thesgem spent the weekend @startrektour to visit beautiful replica sets of the USS Enterprise circa 1966 and to wish @WilliamShatner a 90th #HappyBirthday. This was non-essential travel to the US for <60 hours. Here is my #Covid_19 thread FYI /1
@TheSGEM bought the tickets months ago when we fully expected to travel w/o restrictions. Sadly, #Covid_19 and the #DeltaVariant meant US/Canada border restrictions remain in place. What follows is what we had to do be able to go and how it went. /2
Cross border travel by land is more challenging but not impossible, so air travel was option 1. Our destination was Ticonderoga in Eastern NY State. The closest intl airport is Burlington VT. Toronto-Burlington flight options are few and involve weird stops in DC or Detroit. /3

Long before LTC, there MUST be decent home care. I have not talked about how this affects me personally until now. I have a close family member with early onset dementia. Her essential family caregiver is unable to fulfill that function adequately.
Their son can help but he too has cognitive and emotional challenges that limit his ability to assume the caregiver role.
As a family unit, they lack the executive function necessary to organize the outside help they need to 'age in place' as the saying goes.
