Arjuna, if you leave a battle that is commenced you not only lose your repute of fearsome warrior & become a sinner but also will be disgraced.

Your cowardice will be spread all over. All will know about it & will swear upon you. Death is much better than such disgrace!
Shastras say that the amount of time a person lives in heaven is directly proportional to his fame..

Equally, the amount of time he lives in naraka is proportional to his accumulated infamy
An incident from ramayana (Uttara Kanda) is cited here..

Sita was rescued from Ravana's grip & all of them were about to return back to Ayodhya.

Someone saw Sita & he started bad-mouthing her, casting aspersions on her character. Rama was upset at this..
He asked Lakshmana to drop-off Sita in a nearby forest, unable to bear the venomous talk. Lakshmana was quite confused & angry.

He asked 'Brother, some fool somewhere is blabbering. Why should our beloved Sita suffer for this? Does she deserve such a punishment?'
Rama then said 'Lakshmana, we all know Sita is perfect & pure. This man is talking ill & in nearby future, such venom will spread all over our country rapidly. It will become a great disrespect & dishonor for my dear wife & we won't be able to bear it. I am stemming it right now'
These are words of Rama Himself

अकीर्तिर यस्य गीयेत लॊके भूतस्य कस्य चित |
पतत्य एवाधमाँल लॊकान यावच छब्दः स कीर्त्यते ||

If there is disrespect & dishonor (even if arising from plain rumour), then Sita will be forced to spend time in naraka. How can I silently let her suffer?
If we look at the above incident, it is quite clear that someone who is carrying great fame & responsibility should take every bit of care to make sure that no disrespect & dishonor occurs to his/her name..
