Last year we published in @BloodJournal that diffuse myocardial fibrosis was very common in individuals with sickle cell disease and that hydroxyurea and blood transfusions did not prevent it, even if these were started at a young age. ashpublications.org/blood/article/… This was a very disappointing finding - as diffuse myocardial fibrosis could be associated with several heart problems and heart failure in individuals with sickle cell disease... We wondered if a bone marrow transplant would be any good? #SCD #BMTsm

In our latest publication in @BloodJournal, @pigtowner and I report an increase in myocardial extracellular volume (ECV) in patients with #SickleCell disease despite early intervention with disease-modifying therapies ☹️ sciencedirect.com/science/articl… Increased ECV fraction correlates strongly with histologically quantified myocardial fibrosis👉leading to cardiomyopathy (which is a leading cause of death in individuals with #SickleCell disease).
