A difficult truth is preferable to a palatable lie.
One year ago, a son of our city, sentenced #OurLondonFamily to death for the crime of being different. Singled out & marked for execution because they were deemed to be enemies in an invisible war.
Dear London, the difficult truth is that his was not an imported hate, but rather one grown in plain sight. A hate that took root & grew in a forest city. A hate we chose not to see because we preferred the ease of wilful blindness over the harsh reality of the difficult truth.

A small favour to ask. Do not refer to this as an “unthinkable tragedy”. Truth be told, I think about it all the time. When I enter the mosque, I think about the New Zealand & Quebec City mosque shootings & the possibility that my wife & children could lose their husband & dad.
I think about Muslim women (including members of my own family) who wear a hijab in observance of their faith with full knowledge that in doing so, it renders them a target for scorn, hate, insults, ridicule, violence or in #LdnOnt on June 6th, 2021, a target for murder.
