What you're looking at is the Gulf of Mexico on fire. As in the actual gulf, i.e. the ocean. All thanks to a gas line that burst underwater near the offshore platform you see there. It's apparently been burning for hours. Another view of the fire in the Gulf of Mexico:

The LAFD reportedly put the confiscated fireworks in the truck before detonation, as it was apparently reinforced to contain the explosion. Bomb squad: What should we do, Chief?

Chief: Put it in the truck and detonate

Bomb squad: They're just fireworks, Chief

Chief: Yeah but we don't know where they came from, this will be safer

[one hour and one explosion later]

Chief:

Regarding the news bit that's been going around, there is no "faithful" retelling of the King Arthur story because there is no definitive version of it. It's literally impossible. His story isn't historical record but myth that has been added to by various writers over centuries. Almost all the most famous stories and characters we know were added by either Geoffrey of Monmouth or Chrétien de Troyes a full 600+ years after "Arthur" was roughly dated to have lived. Scholars can't even agree on whether there WAS an Arthur.

I don't actually think we're talking enough about how bad this is. Or connecting the dots between Trump failing to adequately staff important positions, then firing everyone and installing clueless yes-men with zero experience, and the extent of the Russian hacking efforts. For those who haven't been following this story: Russia hacked a number of vital agencies' data, including:

- U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile
- The U.S. Treasury
- The Pentagon
- CDC
- State Department
- Justice Department
- DHS
- multiple utility & tech companies

I have to question the wisdom of releasing a heavy, dark superhero movie in theaters while there's still a raging pandemic, a movie the majority of general audiences will realistically only see as a 4-hour cut of a movie that already underwhelmed them once. I'm genuinely trying to understand the reasoning here & failing. A movie that did so-so with general theatrical audiences once & only got a greenlight to be recut in order to boost a struggling streaming platform now potentially undercutting that by also opening in theaters? Why?

Donate, but donate smartly. A thread. For those who are wondering how to donate smartly, @actblue has a general donation fund that's being split between all Dem candidates win winnable Senate races. You can donate here:

Oh no. Oh my God. This year has taken too much. I've been keeping the panic over our swiftly-crumbling democracy at bay reasonably well but this is tipping me over the edge. We can vote out the President. We can vote out the Senate. Vote on (some) legislation. But we can't do a single thing about Supreme Court appointments.

So over the narrative of blame for film critics who dared to do their job & review TENET. Not all have a choice. Critics have to make ends meet, too. A review isn't going to make or break someone seeing a film in COVID times. Stop punching in the wrong direction already. I didn't know film critics are supposed to double as public health officials & politicians, as well. Did we somehow get the power to convince anti-maskers & people in areas that are open to stay indoors with a single review? Miraculous how we've gained such influence overnight.

Reminder to those still on the "Shakespeare wrote King Lear while in quarantine; what are YOU doing?" people, Shakespeare was able to because he had the privilege of being supported by multiple patrons throughout his lifetime. He didn't have to worry about money. /1 You can draw a direct line from that patronage system to the fact the vast majority of freelance writers or those able to write books and finish screenplays can do so because they have the luxury of a partner who supports them and is the main breadwinner. /2

If the @NHL truly wants to make ice hockey a more diverse sport, it needs to start by actually making it affordable for everyone, not just rich or elite kids. The cost of hockey is prohibitively expensive. We're talking $1000s per year. $1000s. More for goalies. /1 Addressing racism at grassroots level means nothing if no one but rich kids can even afford to break into the sport.

I played on my county's first-ever girls' ice hockey team. The only reason I could afford to was because our wealthy coach offered to buy our equipment for us.

Can't help but think of a fellow writer friend who lost interest in the #AB5 fight almost as soon as it started because, as he told me, he didn't truly believe @cafwu had any real chance of accomplishing anything. That we'd never accomplish...exactly what we just accomplished. Now thinking about when a guy I had a thing for told me I didn't have what it takes to move to his country & thrive. I held onto that burning little coal of spite in my chest. Fast-forward to now. I've lived in Berlin, I've thrived in LA. I'm apparently motivated by contrariness.

So the Trump administration has already released at least 4 videos in the past WEEK that have been proven to be doctored or deep-faked. We already know Russia plans to flood our social media (again) and we know GOP figures are not above sharing them. Stay sharp, everyone. /1 John Dabkovich, actual anchor who gave this interview to Harry Belafonte, NOT Joe Biden /2

Lost in all the business with COVID-19 and jokes about the #NewMutants release date carousel is the fact it will be the first live-action superhero movie to feature a queer relationship. Not queerbaiting, not a tease, but a relationship. atomtickets.com/movie-news/the… I just really feel like this should be getting more attention. It's a shame that coronavirus and TENET have overshadowed everything else because seeing queer representation on the big screen, especially in a comic book movie like #NewMutants, is so important and so overdue.

Happy #NationalBlackCatAppreciationDay to these two little gremlins, who needed a comforter wall built between them at 6am this morning to stop them from beating the crap out of each other on top of me. Seeing a lot of "Someone stop this!"/"Someone do something!" tweets re: what's happening with USPS.

Guys. We - YOU - ARE those someones.

Call/email your Senators. ESPECIALLY call/email GOP Senators. Tell them to release the CARES Act & HEROES Act loans for USPS. /1 Start or at least sign a petition in support of saving the USPS. Share your story about why you need the USPS. Encourage others to do the same. Pressure Congress to repeal the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act. /2

This thread just created that strange, bittersweet feeling when you already KNOW something about yourself but see it reflected back to you in text from a complete stranger and feel stripped bare. And girls? We get diagnosed much later in life because we almost always lack the outward hyperactivity of boys that triggers testing & diagnosis in the first place. But the signs were always there for me. I could talk someone's ear off - if I was interested. Constant "Why?"

There are so many articles & op-eds out there about the damage the current iteration of #AB5 is doing to California freelancers that I've decided to pull them all together into one thread. I'll continue to add as new pieces get published about this anti-freelancer law. #AmendAB5 Of the many things I hate about #AB5 is that I find myself agreeing with hardline conservative/libertarian/alt-right figures. I don't agree with Edward Ring or almost anything he stands for but... he's spot-on here about what a disaster AB5 is. californiaglobe.com/section-2/the-…

It shouldn't have happened in the first place...but I give the utmost credit to Shane Black for being one of the very few men who have screwed up very badly, very publicly, for seeming to fully understand how and why he screwed up, and that he will truly learn and grow from it. I get that men are frustrated with cancel culture (as am I) and men who badly screw up being written off forever. The problem is that so few apologies seem sincere or like they're coming from a place of those men actually understanding how they are responsible for their actions.
