One aspect of the *transition* which I believe is under appreciated is the JUNK left by the oil & gas industry that is obstructing a buildout of new renewable energy projects. Nowhere is this made more plain than the federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. boem.gov/renewable-ener… In a recent @boem public meeting on the proposed Wind Energy Areas (WEAs), @LeoLindner6 asked whether these new areas would be inhibited by active or old infrastructure that has been “decommissioned in place.” Regional Director Michael Celata (hey Mike!) stepped in to answer. 2

Hot tip for the researchers & curious out there: Government agencies often pen their own histories & interview top brass. It's really fascinating & fun stuff. I stumbled upon this @CavernsNPS history w/ some great insights ab the oil industry and the CCC. nps.gov/parkhistory/on… The @USACEHQ has an indispensable library usace.army.mil/About/History/… and I'll always point folks to my former agency's @BOEM Environmental Studies Program which has everything from shipwrecks to subsistence uses of the Gulf. marinecadastre.gov/espis/#/

There's a lot to unpack in this discussion & I'll try to do so as respectfully as I can muster. 🧵 First, the premise that production is constrained. The United States increased domestic production by *145%* between 2008 & 2019. Do folks appreciate how much of an increase that is? A slight dip from 2019 is not why your gasoline costs too much. 1/

Finally got a chance to listen to this sobering discussion featuring the incredibly good @SaraSneath. Sara is persistent & curious, & committed to telling a story accurately. But above all, her reporting is grounded in the humanness of it all. She cares about people and it shows. It’s important that we understand that bad policy, oblivious regulators, craven politicians, negligent and evil corporations conspire to treat real human beings like they are collateral damage. These humans are NOT our enemies.

Louisiana's Oilfield Site Restoration Program is perfect case study of why states have failed to managed to oil & gas wells and why we need a national Abandoned Well Administration. A 🧵🧵 1/ The Louisiana Oilfield Site Restoration Program (OSR), established in 1993 by R.S. 30:80, is one of the first programs in the nation to address the cleanup of derelict wells and improperly abandoned oilfield sites. 2/

What are the odds that these are incarcerated workers performing the cleanup work? As a reminder, the fossil industry uses cheap incarcerated labor to boost its profits. @carly_berlin @scalawagmag scalawagmagazine.org/2020/03/powerl…

Prepare for some tried and true industry rhetoric/propaganda to justify and prolong oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. I've got a thread for ya with a few I've seen deployed like clockwork. 🧵⤵️ 1/ 1. "Revenues/royalties will fund coastal restoration."

Classic hostage situation. If you don't do this, then you won't get this. Public goods conditional on private profit. 2/ ImageImage

At the root of my work is safeguarding human life. I support a massive buildout of public transit because it makes life fundamentally better, reduces greenhouse emissions, and saves lives. 1/ In the United States, car accidents are one of the leading causes of death and injury for children under the age of 18. usnews.com/news/health-ne… 2/

I made a comic about how the #oilandgas market functions a whole year ago!

I still think it's pretty good, even if I have no artistic talent (thanks, clip art!) 🐨🕶️🌏medium.com/@megan.millike… Image

I am very excited about @AllyDalsimer's run for Congress. She's a fellow former public servant who dedicated her life to managing & protecting the DOD's significant landholdings. Like me, she left public service during the last administration, but has continued her fight. We need more people who have lived and breathed the guts of government and understand what it will take to craft a well-funded, well-staffed, and durable #GreenNewDeal. She can bridge the wide gulf between legislative intent and administrative rule-making.

Got Damn it. "The Gulf of Mexico in particular provides the U.S. with a very good geologic basin for offshore Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in terms of saline reservoir capacity, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR)-related storage capacity, and shallow water." netl.doe.gov/sites/default/… 1. How does this mesh with existing abandoned wells? ehn.org/oil-and-gas-we…
