Rural turnout in VA is higher than 2017 and running 10-15 points more conservative. Lotta factors, but the 2A Sanctuary movement that swept the state in the wake of the 2019 elections energized and woke up a lot of people who typically stay home on Election Day. #VaElections2021 Left is Cumberland County in 2017, right is Cumberland County in 2021.

The biggest problem with David Chipman's appearance on Chinese state-run media immediately after Sandy Hook is what he said, not where he said it.
bearingarms.com/camedwards/202… During his interview, Chipman repeatedly said that the death of school children didn't have to be "meaningless," as long as there was gun control legislation enacted as a result. 2/

The DOJ's new proposed rule on pistol braces and AR-style pistols has been released, along with model "red flag" legislation. A brief thread with some initial impressions. #2A #guncontrol

justice.gov/opa/pr/justice… First, while the DOJ says its trying to offer clear guidance for the gun industry, their "solution" is a new worksheet/checklist that offers up a lot of subjective language rather than a standard, easy-to-follow definition. 2/

There are 20-million modern sporting rifles in private hands, yet 2x as many Americans are murdered each year by someone using their fists or feet than a rifle of any kind.

Trying to ban and arrest our way to safety a) doesn’t work and b) violates our civil rights. I realize some people don’t give a shit about 2), but we should all care about the first part, particularly when we know strategies that are far more effective at reducing violent crime without any new gun control laws.

Miss E’s insurance has denied coverage for the immunotherapy cocktail her doctor wants her to receive.

We’re appealing, but every day without treatment the tumors grow a little bigger.

Not gonna lie, feeling pretty beat down at the moment. I don’t even know what to say to all the words of support, prayers, and offers to help. “Thank you” doesn’t quite cut it, but I mean it.

Miss E’s doc has started the appeals process, and I will keep y’all updated. If I need to name and shame the insurance company, I will. 2/

I don't think these red flag bills are coming from a place of "let's take all your guns". I understand the point they're trying to address: to stop the most dangerous people from hurting themselves or others.

But this bill doesn't do that, @marcorubio. Here's why. 1/ @marcorubio A lot of the requirements that you have in place for due process protections are great. But there's no requirement that the person deemed to be a danger to themselves or others receives any mental health treatment whatsoever. 2/

Three years ago today Miss E went to the ER in Farmville worried she was having a heart attack. She wasn’t, but the chest X-Ray showed something weird in one of her lungs. “Probably pneumonia,” they said, and sent her home with antibiotics. 1/ A couple of weeks went by and she went back for another look at her lungs. Nothing had changed. That’s when we started to get a little concerned. They scheduled her for a biopsy. Meanwhile, life went on. We got a puppy. My car caught fire. And we waited for the procedure. 2/

Thank you to everyone who's been praying for Miss E. I am really sorry to tell you we did not get the news we were hoping for this morning. 1/ E has ten tumors in both lungs, all pretty small. Eight of them are larger than they were a few months ago.

We've pretty much run out of standard treatment options, so now we're going to have look at clinical trials. 2/

I try not to tweet when I'm angry, but this POS in New Zealand has me in a white-hot rage. My annoyance at AOC for trying to go after the NRA, or gun control groups for already politicizing this horror, is nothing compared to the volcanic fury I feel towards this sick fuck. 1/ To quote @esaagar, "What makes me the most sick about the New Zealand shooter is the clinical nature of his violence and manifesto. It is rare and sickening to see the face of pure evil."

All of us are sinners. I believe few of us are truly evil. 2/

Remember, their idea of "gun safety" is "don't own a gun". Virtually all of their policies are predicated on the idea that you can't reduce crime unless you reduce gun ownership... which is contradicted by the dramatic decline in violent crime since the early 1990's. In 1980, California and Florida both had their highest homicide rates in history; 14.5 per 100,000 people. Violent crime in CA was 893.6 per 100k, while in FL it was even higher at 983.5.

By 2017, CA's homicide rate had dropped to 4.6 while FL's was slightly higher at 5.4. 2/

New York's legislature is set to pass more than a half-dozen gun control bills today, even as the state's previous gun control package, the SAFE Act, is rife with failure. A brief thread. 1/ thedailystar.com/news/local_new… NY Governor Andrew Cuomo was a big supporter of the SAFE Act's ban on magazines over 7 rounds. Judges have ruled it unconstitutional and DA's are saying they won't enforce it. 2/

If you listen to the clip, he’s clearly telling a story and building to the point of Lincoln appointing Grant as Lt. General and head of Army of the Potomac, where he proceeded to take Lee on and win where other Union generals had failed. Y’all are such hacks. Trump speaks of the Union generals that came before Grant; great generals, head of their class at West Point, but they didn’t know how to win. And Trump is right. McClellan was a disaster, and would have preferred to keep his army in camp instead of fighting. 2/

A brief thread to emphasize Jesse’s point. On Long Island, anti-gun activists and local Dem politicians recently mounted a campaign to get a local event hall to void their contract to host the Nassau County @FriendsofNRA dinner. It did not go as they hoped it would. 1/ In Brooklyn, anti-gun activists and local Dem politicians were able to get three venues to back out of their contract with the locals Friends of NRA committee before Knights of Columbus hall agreed to host. The activists on LI had a playbook to follow. 2/ newsday.com/long-island/su…

I’m gonna try to distract myself from thinking about tomorrow (and now get that stupid Fleetwood Mac song out of my head) with a little thread on the deplatforming of another controversial media figure from an earlier day: Dr. J.R Brinkley, the “goat gland doctor”. 1/ John Romulus Brinkley was a real doctor. Or at least he had a certificate from something called the Kansas City Eclectic Medical University and in 1915 that was good enough to practice medicine in eight states. Dr. Brinkley was in business. 2/

So let's talk about universal background checks (we'll also get into "buying elections", but it's gonna take a few tweets to get there). 1/ "Universal background checks make the country safer", says @Alyssa_Milano. The only problem is, the latest research (from a gun control supporter no less) is that universal background checks in WA, CO, and DE "had little effect". 2/

It was right about now, 243 years ago, that Paul Revere left Dr. Joseph Warren's home in Boston and began his journey towards Lexington and the history books. Before Revere left Boston, he had to assure that Patriots across the Charles River in Charlestown would get word of which route the British Regulars would be using to reach Lexington. For that, he enlisted the help of Robert Newman and Thomas Bernard.

Seeing @jack endorse a one party state and @deesnider remember the stifling of expression from the PMRC tonight reminded me of the story of the Klaus Renft Combo, East Germany's most popular band.. until it wasn't allowed to exist. Let me tell you a story, Jack. I read about the Klaus Renft Combo in Stasiland, which is worth a read before you plunge headlong into the embrace of a one-party state, especially one with incredible surveillance powers. h/t to @jonronson for mentioning the book in his feed recently.

I was on the air while today's school safety presentation was taking place. Having now caught up, here's my stance:

Not giving up my due process rights.

Adults can and should be able to exercise their constitutional rights.

1/
Gun bans don't work. In fact, I believe in general that supply side gun controls (laws restricting legal access in hopes of stopping criminals) are not nearly as effective as efforts to reduce demand among criminals.
