This morning, after dropping the kids off, I came home and stopped to take in the aftermath of a chaotic morning. And it got me thinking.

This is what marriage is to me. 🧵 Bibs I should have tossed in the sink that were leaking milk onto the counter. Little toothbrushes they used to scrub the teeth that have been keeping them up at night. Tiny hairbands from Penelope’s quick updo in which she kept repeating the word “bosh” while I brushed her hair.

It’s time to have the talk. Don’t come at these talks with anger. These are likely people you love. When we point fingers we push people right back into the arms of people like Trump.

My mother has been battling a rare form of skin cancer for the last 12 years and ObamaCare makes her treatment affordable. I’m #VotingBiden because he’s the candidate committed to improving the healthcare system in this country, not destroying it. My marriage. The most sacred thing in my life, is threatened by the reshaping of the courts under this disastrous, homophobic administration. So I’m voting for the only pro-LGBTQ+ candidate in the presidential election. I’m happily #VotingBiden to protect my family.

During the last year I’ve visited close to 100 LGBTQ equality centers and homeless service providers across the country. I’ve listened to stories about the lack of access to care, mental health services, community, and housing. I sat in a living room in California with a young, black, trans woman who had been shuffled through the foster care system wondering why it wasn’t easier to find a home and stability on her own as she started planting roots with a chosen family and community.

Excited to be spending the day with @PeteButtigieg here in Iowa to witness the action and energy on the ground firsthand! So far Iowans have asked him about social security, health care, foreign policy, climate change, and arts education. (Airhorn for the arts!) Extremely personal gathering here in Iowa Falls as grandparents, worried about their grandchildren, ask @PeteButtigieg questions about the rising cost of healthcare and kids’ physical safety in the classroom. Reminds you exactly of what’s at stake in this election.

I came out when I was 17. Terrified, I ran away from home, crashed on friends’ couches and occasionally slept in my car to stay out of the way.

Today I’m traveling the country on behalf my husband, just two weeks shy of the Iowa Caucuses as he seeks the American presidency. It gets better, if others are willing to make it better. I survived because people believed in me. Made space for me. Affirmed my worth and celebrated my existence.

Today at an event in Louisville an attendee asked me how I continue to meet with and talk with folks who don’t like who I am. How do I continue to go out there, day in and day out, and talk to those who don’t see me as a human worthy of equality and acceptance? How do I continue to stand firm and believe in myself and my place in this world? How do I respond to those voters? What would I say to those who don’t see me as an equal?
