DeSantis has chosen to continue endangering the lives of already-vulnerable Floridians. You cannot legislate LGBTQ people out of existence. The Senate is poised to vote on the #RespectForMarriageAct today.

This morning, after dropping the kids off, I came home and stopped to take in the aftermath of a chaotic morning. And it got me thinking.

This is what marriage is to me. 🧵 Image Bibs I should have tossed in the sink that were leaking milk onto the counter. Little toothbrushes they used to scrub the teeth that have been keeping them up at night. Tiny hairbands from Penelope’s quick updo in which she kept repeating the word “bosh” while I brushed her hair.

There are voters prepared to vote for this president who may only change their mind because of you. You may be the only thing that gets through. Not a Project Lincoln ad. Not a sassy tweet. Not a yard sign. Not a mailer. You.

It’s time to have the talk. Don’t come at these talks with anger. These are likely people you love. When we point fingers we push people right back into the arms of people like Trump.

Try, “I would like to know what you feel you stand to lose or gain by voting for President Trump? What scares you?”

I’ve enjoyed hosting some chats on Instagram these last few weeks to bring us just a little closer together during this isolating and confusing time. If you missed them, you can catch them on YouTube. (Link in bio) Here are some highlights!👇 I enjoyed catching up with @DrBiden to chat life on the trail as a campaign spouse and the importance of unity going into the election this fall. @JoeBiden even stopped by to say hello!

All politics is personal.

My mother has been battling a rare form of skin cancer for the last 12 years and ObamaCare makes her treatment affordable. I’m #VotingBiden because he’s the candidate committed to improving the healthcare system in this country, not destroying it. My marriage. The most sacred thing in my life, is threatened by the reshaping of the courts under this disastrous, homophobic administration. So I’m voting for the only pro-LGBTQ+ candidate in the presidential election. I’m happily #VotingBiden to protect my family.

👨‍🏫 If you’re a parent struggling to homeschool teenagers, here are some classroom tips and ideas.

Disclaimer: I taught middle school, so some of these ideas may need modifications. 🧠 Remember: you just need to get your kids thinking and then *engage* with them in that thinking. Discussion goes a long way. But this isn’t a time to give up.

👩‍🏫 If you’re a teacher, don’t be shy and feel free to offer your modifications or suggestions in a comment below!

Ok, #TeamPete. @PeteButtigieg and I were married on June 16th, so my favorite number on this board is $616. Who wants to grab it? → p4a.us/TheGame @PeteButtigieg Thank you, Jaclyn in Highland Park, IL!

Let’s keep this theme going. @PeteButtigieg took me on our first date on August 28th. (We went to a South Bend Cubs Game.) So who wants to pitch in $828? 👉 p4a.us/TheGame Image

During the last year I’ve visited close to 100 LGBTQ equality centers and homeless service providers across the country. I’ve listened to stories about the lack of access to care, mental health services, community, and housing. I sat in a living room in California with a young, black, trans woman who had been shuffled through the foster care system wondering why it wasn’t easier to find a home and stability on her own as she started planting roots with a chosen family and community.

Excited to be spending the day with @PeteButtigieg here in Iowa to witness the action and energy on the ground firsthand! So far Iowans have asked him about social security, health care, foreign policy, climate change, and arts education. (Airhorn for the arts!) Image Extremely personal gathering here in Iowa Falls as grandparents, worried about their grandchildren, ask @PeteButtigieg questions about the rising cost of healthcare and kids’ physical safety in the classroom. Reminds you exactly of what’s at stake in this election. Image

I came out when I was 17. Terrified, I ran away from home, crashed on friends’ couches and occasionally slept in my car to stay out of the way.

Today I’m traveling the country on behalf my husband, just two weeks shy of the Iowa Caucuses as he seeks the American presidency. It gets better, if others are willing to make it better. I survived because people believed in me. Made space for me. Affirmed my worth and celebrated my existence.

Today at an event in Louisville an attendee asked me how I continue to meet with and talk with folks who don’t like who I am. How do I continue to go out there, day in and day out, and talk to those who don’t see me as a human worthy of equality and acceptance? How do I continue to stand firm and believe in myself and my place in this world? How do I respond to those voters? What would I say to those who don’t see me as an equal?

A thread for this #TeacherTalkTuesday

Across the country, teachers and students are heading back to school. As a teacher, it’s one of my favorite times of the year -- one filled with incredible optimism that reflects the hope that comes with a fresh start. But we’re also at a make-or-break moment with our public education system. The same old debates have left us with underfunded schools, underpaid teachers, and growing inequality.
