Found a very interesting article on Downward Causation by Alicia Juarerro, discussing Polanyi's and Prigogine's views. 🧵
Polanyi argues that the higher level imposes boundary conditions that harness the lower level components to serve the higher level whole. However, he also claims that boundary conditions must be fixed by an external agency, not by the lower level itself.

But over time, I have come to view a PKM as a journey, traveling in the continuum of space and time of ideas
2/3 PKMs are streams of thought, paths with branchings (Luhmann's #Folgezettel).
Our thoughts can wander in all sorts of directions. We might start with one idea and then branch off into other related ideas. Or we might come back to an old idea and think about it in a new way.
