महाभारत के वन पर्व के अनुसार ये आभीर एक मलेच्छ जाति है जिसका यदुवंशीयो से कोई संबंध नहीं है मत्स्य पुराण (भाग-1,अध्याय 50 ,श्लोक 76) के अनुसार आभीरों का Origin मलेच्छ वर्ण से है जिन्होंने छल से शासन किया था, यह श्लोक महाभारत में वर्णित आभीरों का मलेच्छ(अनार्य/ शूद्र जनजाति) होना प्रमाणित करता है 2/15
