A UN committee has released a critical review of Canada’s adherence to the #CRPD.

Canada has been directed to repeal Track 2 #MAiD, raise the “woefully inadequate” #CanadaDisabilityBenefit, and address regional disparities. 1/3 The committee’s language is firm. There is no wiggle room. Canada may “be deemed against the [CRPD]” for not realizing the right to decide.

Regarding MAiD, it names Track 2 MAiD as being ableist.

In summary, 60,301 people died by MAiD from 2016 to 2023. Since the law change a person has died by Track 2 MAiD every day. These statistics illustrate that those who died by Track 2 MAiD were more likely to be institutionalized, low income, women, isolated, and young.

Two years ago last Friday, Bill C-7 became law. To mark the day, we sent a letter to the Minister of Health, Jean-Yves Duclos.

We're tweeting from tonight's Special Joint Committee on #MAiD (#AMAD) meeting. The theme is the "protection" of persons with disabilities.

Tonight, we expect to hear from @DrHeid, @ProfTimSUBC, and Dave Shannon amongst others.

We're tweeting from the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) #AMAD this evening. It isn't yet clear what the theme will be - but the witnesses are all medical doctors and professors.

Dr. Perrot is making a case for more widespread use of advanced requests (aha! the theme must be advanced requests). "Audrey's amendment did not go far enough for most people."
