When your blood clots, there are a few mechanisms that occur. One of them involves a factor known as Platelet Factor 4 (PF4) which is released from platelets and involved in the clotting process. 1/11 Research has shown PF4 interacts with heparin to reduce its effectiveness as an anticoagulant that can be used to help prevent a variety of clotting concerns. But in some rare cases, another problem can occur called Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia. 2/11
