‘The Nairobi Mafia,’ a term used by Somalis to describe a coalition of diplomats, journalists, so-called experts, consultants, international NGOs, former Somali warlords, and businessmen.

This group has now turned their attention to #Ethiopia.

trtworld.com/opinion/seven-… The 'Nairobi Mafia' work in cahoots and are the go-to guys for #Somali affairs (now #Ethiopia)
In fact, they have been running Somalia (planning to run #Ethiopia) from their Nairobi offices for many years (to come); advising and influencing key international players.

US' @PowerUSAID is visiting #Ethiopia this week.
Top Ethiopian officials say that the US is pushing for a regime change and is determined to bring the TPLF back in power. This raises questions about concepts such as:
- Democracy
- Sovereign Nation
- Human Rights
1/
@PowerUSAID Democracy: #Ethiopia had an election in June (there are questions about the integrity of the election). But it seems most Ethiopians prefer PM @AbiyAhmedAli as a leader - they don’t want the return of the TPLF.
Is democracy about the will of the people or the will of the US? 2/

Since #Tigray rebels took over control Mekelle two weeks ago, there have been credible reports of human rights violations. That the rebels are executing people they regard as collaborators of the Govt in Addis, they are killing captured soldiers (POWs) & using child soldiers. 1/ Many say that the silence of the US and Europe shows they favour Tigrayan rebels over the #Ethiopian Government. I am curious to know what others think about the west’s intentions and ultimate goals and why they 'favour' Tigray rebels. 2/

In #Ethiopia’s northern Tigray Region, the situation is so complex that it could prolong the war and the suffering of civilians. There are multiple battles with several actors - who don’t all have the same objectives. This will make any future peace deal much more difficult. 1/ #Ethiopian military is fighting to destroy the TPLF - a group that led Ethiopia for 27 years and committed atrocities against its citizens and they are hated by most Ethiopians. But the killing of civilians in Tigray means Ethiopian military will be seen as an occupying force. 2/

TPLF-loyalists should understand that selective justice is injustice. You can empathise with civilians in Tigray, mass-raped and massacred and also highlight crimes committed by the TPLF, who ruled #Ethiopia for nearly three decades but now designated as a terrorist group. 1/ TPLF and other rebels fought a bloody war to bring down the Derg Regime. Led by Meles, they had 27-long-years to create strong institutions - that would have protected citizens and themselves.
Instead, Meles and his accomplices run Ethiopia and the Horn like a mafia state. 2/

#Ethiopia: America and European countries are threatening sanctions against the Ethiopian Govt over human rights violations.

We know atrocities are taking place in Tigray such as rape and massacres - I have met the victims of the conflict and reported from the area. 1/ But the same western nations gave financial, military & moral support to Meles Zenawi, who led a murderous regime for 20+ years; committing crimes against Ethiopians & others including #Somalis.
What's the western nations' motives?
What did Meles do that Abiy isn't doing? 2/

This man (photo) is Zakariye, ex-Head of Al-Shabaab Intelligence. He orchestrated many attacks including the Westgate Mall in Nairobi. Now, he works for the Somali Govt & is protected by his cousin @M_Farmaajo. I understand he regularly travels to Nairobi & often visits Westgate. Few months after the Westgate attack I travelled to Somalia to report from inside Al-Shabaab training camp where the militants were training hundreds of fighters.
Zakariye was praised for 'succeeding the Westgate project'.
