It's a couple of hours before dark. Tonight and tomorrow are going to bring dangerous fire weather to the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Charge your cell phones, put your go bag by the door, and make sure your phone's volume is up. 1/ Before you go to bed tonight, discuss your household's evacuation plan. Where are you meeting if you have to leave? It doesn't have to be an official shelter- a friend's house or park in a non-fire area work. Make sure car keys/wallets are easy to grab and have an outfit ready 2/

For folks in the LA and Bay Area- don't let this cool weather fool you. Dangerous fire weather and high winds are coming Sunday. The good news? You have a nice, cool, Saturday when you can get ready. It's time to prepare to evacuate from a wildfire. Here's my thread on ways to prepare. But I'll add a few tips on stuff you can do tomorrow to make your home more likely to survive too...

It's the first major red flag/high fire danger day of 2020 for us here. If you live in an area that could be affected by wildfire, get set to go now. Before you go to bed tonight, do these things:
1. Turn on your cell phone ringer and turn off "do not disturb" for the night. 1/ 2. Make or review your "what to grab in 5/15/30 minutes" list. Add any new medications/treasured items, and make sure that all of the locations of items are up-to-date. Here's an example- personalize it for you.

So, I'm getting a lot of questions tonight from family and friends on getting ready for #COVID19. Lots of people are really worried, which makes sense. I also have family members with compromised immune systems. Here's what I'm doing to stay safe and keep them safe. 1/ Activities: Washing my hands every time I enter a building (work or home). It's the first thing I do when I get inside. I'm also wiping down my workspace, cell phones (gotta love this job), laptop, and doorknobs every day with Lysol wipes. 2/

Brock Long is talking about getting rid of a lot of @fema, shifting the responsibility to state and local government, just using block grants, and not providing financial support to smaller disaster. Which makes me very, very nervous. #iaem19 Also, Mr. Long is talking about how there are somehow lots more disaster victims and disaster needs, and how we need to figure out why. Anyone want to bet if Climate Change is going to be mentioned in this talk. #iaem19

Next #iaem19 session is learning from @WaltDisneyCo on how they support families during crises through their Family Assistance program. Here's what Maslow's Hierarchy of needs looks like supporting survivors during a crisis. #iaem19

@SamLMontano I think it's partially related to challenges with the all-hazards preparedness push. You don't need to bring 3 gallons of water with you when you evacuate for a wildfire, but you should store as much as you can for an earthquake. 1/ @SamLMontano On our handouts that aren't hazard specific, we tend to go towards the worst case scenario for planning (7-14 days for after a major quake). Which can confuse people who have no idea how to carry all that water with them when they evacuate from a fire 2/

I'm seeing lots of people tweeting that they will get more prepared for an #earthquake today. Please share pictures of what you do! The number one way to encourage others to be more prepared is to demonstrate how you've personally prepared. I'll share what I'm doing today too. First thing- checked on the water storage spots. I refilled the barrel recently and added a few drops of bleach, so that's set. Enough drinking water for 3 people for 10 days. The pool water could be used for flushing toilets/ rinsing things off, but not for cooking or drinking. ImageImage
