Today is the 50th anniversary of women gaining the right to have mortgages, business loans, and credit cards in their own names.
When my Mom got divorced in 1972, she had one credit card from college in her name but no credit rating because all of the financial records automatically went to my Dad, by law.
We lived with my grandparents until she could build up enough credit to rent an apartment.
Financial independence for American women happened *within my lifetime*.
I beg of all of you, do not turn back the clock next Tuesday.

Here's the thing: as a veteran of the 'personhood' battles from 2008/2010 ballot measures to Cory Gardner's 2014 campaign, this stuff was fringe pre-Dobbs.
It's not any more. It's real, thanks to Trump & his SCOTUS Justices.
Lot of y'all underestimated the kooks. Politicians signed off on 'personhood' bills banning abortion, IVF, and contraception as a political sop that didn't mean anything as long as Roe stood.
But the people behind these bills & ballot measures were as serious as a stroke, as we've now seen in Alabama.

If pro-lifers were truly 'pro-life', after Dobbs they would have publicly lobbied Republicans for Medicaid expansion, family leave, improved access to birth control, child nutrition programs like WIC, and the child tax credit.
They did none of those things. Instead, mothers in states with abortion bans are *three times more likely to die*, especially among women of color.

Sometimes the best questions are the most obvious. The fact that no one in journalism - not the Washington Post, not the New York Times, not NPR, not any national legal reporter - bothered to ask whether the plaintiff in '303 Creative' actually existed is frankly shocking. It undermines the entire premise of the case.
We knew Alliance Defending Freedom was fundamentally dishonest.
But taking a fake plaintiff to SCOTUS is whole new level of mendacity.

The media bias towards false centrism manifests itself in the opinion there should be 'reasonable' restrictions on abortion care.
You know, pick a point halfway through pregnancy & start banning it then.
That's not how pregnancy or medical science works. Every pregnancy and its timeline are different. Every pregnant person is different.
Someone can have a healthy pregnancy for most of the time and then have it suddenly go south - like eclampsia or pre-eclampsia.
Serious fetal diagnoses often happen later in pregnancy.

I volunteer at a food bank in Lakewood that doesn't get any federal grants because it doesn't do means testing or income requirements. The philosophy is, if you sign up for a food bank, you need food and we'll help you. Meanwhile the farmer's market my stepdad works on has stopped taking SNAP coupons because the paperwork to buy a few dollars worth of fruit and vegetables was too much for a mostly volunteer-run farmer's market.

I know DeSantis and Florida have all the attention, but the absolute gutting of my alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin and the UT System, has been a wildly under covered story in the media. @UTAustin has long been considered a 'public Ivy' and one of the finest research universities in the country. Greg Abbott and the Republican legislators are ending tenure and blowing up DEI. And President JC Hartzell, Chancellor JB Milliken, and the UT Regents haven't said a damn word.

Every word of this. If the national press corps is already bored w a Biden/Trump race - because that's what it's likely going to be - you're welcome to fill the void left by gutting local newspapers & follow attacks on rights & democracy in the states. In Montana, Republicans won't let the state's sole trans legislator speak, for herself or her constituents. Mississippi is headed for full-blown Jim Crow. Iowa & Arkansas are implementing child labor. And of course Tennessee Rs are literally staging a coup over Nashville.

I'm getting very tired of news stories portraying 'abortion reversal' as benign or product of good intentions. It is not. It is dangerous, Dr Frankenstein science invented by abortion opponents who refuse to believe women want to have abortions & don't regret them. #copolitics Both the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, America's oldest & most respected medical associations, say that abortion reversal is junk science, unethical, and dishonest.

Story leaves out that both the American Medical Association & the American College of ObGyns say "Claims regarding abortion “reversal” treatment are not based on science and do not meet clinical standards."

Abortion bans with exceptions for rape, incest, life of the mother, & fetal abnormality are bullshit.
Because the underlying idea is that if a woman has been sufficiently traumatized/subjected to violence she 'deserves' to have an abortion. And if a woman has been punished by the circumstances of conception, she should be punished by being forced to give birth.
All abortion bans are about power and hatred of women. Full stop.

Again, for the 85th time: the bigoted baker's opinion of someone else's choice in a life partner is in fact irrelevant. There's a whole world out there of people living their life different than you that's none of your business.
Shut up and bake the damn cake. #copolitics Also I didn't notice the bigoted baker objecting to making cakes for people on their second or third marriage, and the Bible talks about divorce a lot more than gay people. His "religious objections" are completely subjective and irrational.

Another great piece from @BySajaHindi @denverpost on how, with Roe overturned, Colorado legislators plan to build on the abortion rights protections in last year's Reproductive Health Equity Act.
#copolitics #coleg "Karen Middleton, executive director of Cobalt, said the reproductive rights group has received reports of doctors in Colorado getting called by doctors in Texas threatening to report them because a patient had mentioned they’d provided them with an abortion. The proposed bill

@hollyotterbein @ec_schneider this is a lie. O'Dea wasn't drowned out, he lied about his record on abortion. He voted for *and signed a petition* for a no-exceptions abortion ban ballot measure.
And if you'd called abortion rights groups we would have told you that. #copolitics We're the ones who found O'Dea's signature on the abortion ban ballot petition.
We've been talking to voters about abortion in Colorado for *14 years*.
I beg you, please stop taking Republican operatives at their word because they don't know a damn thing.

Every word of this piece. Abortion bans mean poor women will get poorer and more women and babies, especially in communities of color, will suffer and die. Because abortion bans are about power, not 'life'. #copolitics Image

Here's what the male & Republicans pundits are missing about abortion as an 'issue': how deeply, profoundly personal it is to live in a female reproductive body and the challenges it presents.
Much of your life is spent trying not to get pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or worried that you are pregnant and figuring out what to do about it.
As I put it, one in four American women has had an abortion and most of the rest of us have, at some point, peed on a stick in a bathroom and bargained with God.
