🧵Update for those who didn't stay up late with @SDCityCouncil last night: The Council voted 5-4 to approve a controversial homeless camping ban.

For folks who prefer a summary vs. a play-by-play thread: tinyurl.com/38erf77z This statement from ex-San Diego mayor @Kevin_Faulconer hit my inbox after midnight. 👇 He's critical of what @SDCityCouncil approved. He's been working on a similar initiative that comes with mandates to provide more shelter.

🧵Former San Diego Mayor @Kevin_Faulconer and ex-Police @ChiefZimmerman held a press conference outside Alpha Project's Barrio Logan shelter this morning to criticize a proposed camping ban pushed by new Mayor @ToddGloria and @CMWhitburnD3. Image Faulconer - who confirmed he's giving "serious consideration" to a run for county supervisor - argued the city needs to commit to opening 1,500 additional shelter beds and consistent police enforcement citywide.

🧵@MayorToddGloria and Council President @SeanEloRiveraD9 just released a draft tenant protection ordinance they say is "designed to provide a high level of protection from evictions for renters to stay in their homes" if they're paying rent and following lease rules. The @SDCityCouncil just voted unanimously to extend the @SDConventionCtr shelter operation through March.

Context: voiceofsandiego.org/topics/governm… The city will rely on $5.3M in federal block grant funds, including $2.7M originally allocated for small business support the city has been unable to dole out and $2.2M previously set to back an affordable housing property acquisition fund. Also $7.7M in unspent funds.

THREAD: Given the nasty weather we've had the past few days, I've been asking city and county officials for updates on any efforts to get homeless San Diegans out of the cold. Here's what I can share for now. 👇 A county spokesman reports that inclement weather vouchers were provided for 325 hotel room nights throughout the county over the weekend. He says the county activated its inclement weather program Friday through this morning for unincorporated areas.

I’ve been getting (and asking) lots of questions about #covid cases at the @SDConventionCtr shelter & the status of the county's hotel program.

No new @SDConventionCtr #s to share (yet) but as of Wednesday, 115 shelter residents had received positive tests in the last week. Here’s the latest I can share on @SanDiegoCounty's hotel program: The county says it now has access to 804 hotel rooms it can offer people who have covid/have been exposed who don't have a safe place to isolate or who are particularly vulnerable homeless San Diegans.

There have been a total of 147 postive tests among shelter residents and staff working at the @SDConventionCtr shelter since it opened in April.
