Sen. Chuck Grassley just tried to pass his bipartisan bill to update the Foreign Agents Registration Act by unanimous consent in the Senate, but Sen. Bob Menendez objected.

Menendez, the ranking member on the Foreign Relations Committee, said they need to study the issue more. Grassley's been working for years on updating FARA to help the Department of Justice enforce the 1930s-era law, which hasn't been updated since the 1960s.

Here's the most current bill text:

Some personal news: A little while ago, I decided to begin the application process for a new US work visa. If all goes well, I’ll be able to work in the US again in a couple months.

So if you’re an editor looking to expand your team, please get in touch! My email is in my bio. A little about me: I’ve covered national security, federal law enforcement, politics (including Congress), and more in the US. I’ve also covered Canadian governments and news.

I love scoops and doing original, investigative reporting. And I'm bilingual in French and English.

It's official: the final version of the NDAA contains major reforms to the United States' anti-money laundering regime. Most notably, shell companies will be forced to disclose their true owners to Treasury -- a major gap in the regime that has been criticized for years. Here's the bill text:

NEW: Remember when HSBC avoided criminal charges for allowing drug kingpins to to launder millions by promising the US DOJ it would clean up its act?

Well, the #FinCENFiles reveal the bank kept facilitating and profiting from suspect transactions:

buzzfeednews.com/article/anthon… The #FinCENFiles show that the bank continued to do business with companies that its own employees raised red flags about. Here are some examples:

Finally, I can share the project I worked on for nearly two years at @BuzzFeedNews:

The #FinCENFiles — 1000s of SARs & other docs — offer an unprecedented view of global financial corruption, the banks enabling it & the govt agencies that fail to stop it. buzzfeednews.com/article/jasonl… This was a massive team effort -- it's been a privilege to work with @JasonLeopold, @MikeSallah7, @TomBWarren, @a_cormier_, @scottpham, @jtemplon, @jsvine, @TanyaKozyreva, @Richard_AHolmes, as well as @ICIJorg & all the partner organizations.

Wow. Billing documents show USA Today White House reporter Susan Page hosted a taxpayer-funded "Girl's Night" in honor of Seema Verma, the Trump administration official in charge of Medicaid, in 2018.

The event cost taxpayers nearly $3,000. For the record, this is not something reporters should be doing.

NYT: Former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein "maneuvered to keep investigators from completing an inquiry into whether the president’s personal and financial links to Russia posed a national security threat."
nytimes.com/2020/08/30/us/… The story mentions how the Senate Intelligence Committee's investigation lacked insight into Trump's finances.

In March 2018, @JasonLeopold and I revealed that SSCI had asked Treasury for financial records on 45 people/entities, but not the Trumps:

New doc obtained via #FOIA (#ATIP) — A top official at a Canadian spy agency tells a newly appointed US official: "I am committed to continuing to build on the excellent relationship between our two organizations and exploring further opportunities to expand such cooperation." Image The letter was sent sometime after March 1, 2020. I submitted the request in June and asked for records from March 1 to the day the search was executed.

Today, the Senate Intelligence Committee released the long-awaited final volume in its three-year, bipartisan Russia investigation. Here are some highlights and areas where the report confirmed my/@BuzzFeedNews’ previous reporting: intelligence.senate.gov/sites/default/… @BuzzFeedNews A note before I start: I am obviously no longer with BuzzFeed and am not doing this on behalf of them. I’m also really sad that after covering this investigation since 2017 (see: countless hours staking out the SCIF and much more), I’m not able to write about the final chapter.

Just finished listening to Wind of Change, the podcast by @praddenkeefe about whether the CIA wrote the song of the same name by Scorpions. Cool podcast about that & the nature of propaganda. Loved the shoutout to #MuellerMemos and the discussion of the Spy Museum & torture too. This is actually the first time I've ever listened to a podcast series. I'm a bit of a late adopter...I mean, I still buy CDs. I started fearing I had a concussion yesterday (had a bad fall last week) so I needed something to pass the time that didn't involve a screen or reading.

LMAO half of this is wrong Thinking about the poor Americans who followed this advice to speak a few words of French while in Canada but used this terrible pronunciation guide, and who were likely mocked as soon as they left... ImageImage

An angry looking sparrow fledgling is hanging out on my patio. 😀

It's healthy, old enough to be outside the nest, and I've seen its dad fly down to take care of it, so the best thing to do is just leave it be. But I left a little food for it/the parents just in case! ImageImage Lily actually found it. We were outside and I noticed her looking excitedly at something in the garden. I figured it was a bug. But it was the little fledgling! Lily never tried to hurt it, but I brought her inside just in case...I gave her "thank you for not killing" treats. Image

Some news: I found out this morning that I'm one of the reporters affected by the cuts at BuzzFeed News. I'm completely gutted and will miss my coworkers so much. It's been an insane, wonderful ride, and I'm incredibly proud of our work. I'll probably have more to say in the future, but I just wanted to thank @CraigSilverman and @pdmcleod for taking a chance on me exactly five years ago. Since then, I've had the opportunity to cover so much and learn from so many wildly talented people, and I'm forever grateful.

Exclusive: Today, Sec. Wilkie testified that VA hospitals “have never run out of equipment.” Another official said staff have "had what they needed” throughout the pandemic.

But nurses & employee complaints to a federal regulator tell a different story.

buzzfeednews.com/article/emmalo… The VA has started reintroducing some healthcare services, but nurses are worried the facilities aren’t ready for what comes next in the pandemic, citing the problems the VA has experienced — and largely refused to publicly acknowledge.
