Today we visit one of the two only decorated caves of Corrèze in France (along with Moulin de Laguenay)...

Cave: #PuyJarrigeII
Place: Brive, Corrèze (France)
Motif: bison
Chronology: premagdalenian Puy Jarrige II cave is located in the commune of Brive, in "Les Rebières". More precisely, it is located in a Triassic sandstone, on the right side of the Courolle valley, near the Corrèze river. There is a cave called Puy Jarrige I, but it has only archaeological deposits.

Chronology: Upper Paleolithic ⁉️Pal. rock art is especially preserved in the karstic regions of Western Europe. To the East, rock art becomes more unusual. In fact, until 2010 there was not any remaining of this kind in the Balkans. Fortunately, things are changing thanks to the hard work of archaeologists.

In parallel to the excavation of the site, part of the team has been developing a surface survey of the interior of the cavity, …but what does this work consist of ⁉️⁉️ Image When we are in a cave with parietal art, we must consider the possible remains that prehistoric artists and visitors left behind. They provide us with data about the chronology, the caving progression, the lighting systems, the artistic operative chain, etc. 🔥👣🧐

Chronology: #Premagdalenian ⁉️Chufin cave, also known as the cave of Moro Chufín, is located on a cliff above the reservoir of La Palombera, at the confluence of the rivers Lamasón and Nansa, in Cantabria. It was discovered in 1972 by Manuel de Cos Borbolla and the reservoir guard Primo González. ⚓️

Chronology: #Premagdalenian ⁉️This is a really small cave (with least than 30 meters of development), currently accessed through a small hole in #Ertxiña mountain.
💭It would be interesting to known how was the cave during the Upper Paleolithic. ➡️Currently, there are a lot of blocks and some speleothems.

Chronology: #Premagdalenian ➡️⁉️The Carranza River is a short river that rises in Karrantza (Bizkaia) and connects with the Asón River in Ramales de la Victoria (Cantabria). The Carranza gorge is the only way out of the valley and is characterized by an abrupt karstic orography plenty of caves and shelters.

Motif: Black bison and red stains
Chronology: #Magdalenian Etxebarri is a pyrenean cave with #Magdalenian rock art, placed in the beautiful massif of Arbailles, in the hearth of #Zuberoa, #BasqueCountry.

The bison we have presented here is not especially wonderful, but it stands out because of its location deep inside the cave. 👇😉
